Sintesi dell'editore

The Bedford Boys is the astonishing true story of 21 young men who were killed during the first horrifying minutes of D-Day and the friends and families they left behind in the small town of Bedford. Twenty-one sons killed - no other town in America suffered a greater loss in one day. It is an unforgettable story of triumph, courage, and tragedy based on extensive interviews with survivors and relatives as well as diaries and letters.

Alex Kershaw's remarkable book brings to vivid, heartbreaking life the hitherto untold story of one small American town, their sons, and the brutal, bloody war that deprived them of their futures.

gripping narrative of a community sacrifice

The story of the first wave of D-Day and how it affected the small town of Bedford, Virginia. The community lost 21 young men in the invasion for it's nationalized National Guard unit was chosen to spear head the greatest invasion in history. One community's sacrifice and the men who made it. The story is well told and you can feel the anguish of those involved.

excellent

Takes you to the front line - the description of the D-Day landing is totally engaging and leaves you in no doubt as to the true despair and horror of that place as well as the courage and spirit of the men who fought and died there

POWERFUL STORY!!

In 2019 we made a trip to VA to meet a good friend that I served with on my 2006 OEF mission. He suggested we meet in Bedford for lunch & then tour the National D-DAY Memorial! I was aware of the Bedford mil unit that had suffered extreme casualties that shocked their home town. An excellent researched, written book & well narrated. My 4th book I've purchased by Alex Kershaw.

So unbelievably personal

Books about D-Day never get repetitive. The event was so all encapsulating that it just can’t be written about enough. Alex Kershaw has written a wonder here. Bedford...you know the town. The people...you can see them. It’s as American as anything. But the pain is unimaginable and the loss. The ultimate sacrifice of ordinary Americans stuns and makes us so grateful.

What they went through can’t be calculated. So you listen again and again try to understand what the historic event must have truly been like. Wow!!

Good but skimmable

I liked the super detailed experiences of the soldiers during the landing of D-Day, really took me there with the soldiers and taught me new things about the first landings and just how bad it was at Omaha beach. But all the other details about how it was at home in America, was less of what I wanted. In reality there was only 3-4 chapters that caught my full attention and it was the ramp up to D-Day and the recovery of the soldiers after. Still learned loads of new things.

Heart wrenching as you put yourself in their boots

Finished this book very quickly. Couldnt't stop listening. I come from a small town and am in the National Guard, so it was very personal to hear what these boys went through and all they and those they left behind sacrificed for our country. The world cannot forget the evil they battled, and it must not be allowed to return. These men were truly brave, and each should be remembered as an American hero.

Sacrifice

Tells in gory detail and heartbreaking reference to the horror of war both at the front and at home where worry and lack of knowledge kindle burning fear. Future generations need to know about our mistakes to let them learn how we had to give up so many lives to achieve the peace that we all want. Todays political leaders should be made to read this.
