Sintesi dell'editore

The lush, secluded mountains of North Carolina's Lake Lure had drawn Lauren Castle into their spell. It was here, in 1938, that Hollywood's most beloved glamour girl, Victoria Frazer, drowned during a scandalous affair with actor Roger Brandt. Few knew about the baby spirited away into the night. That baby was Lauren's mother.

It has been two years since Lauren's filmmaker husband died mysteriously at Lake Lure while making a documentary on Roger Brandt. Now Lauren has received a warning that her husband was murdered. What deadly secret had he uncovered in this scenic idyll?

To find her answers, Lauren must face her own past as well as her grandmother's, and delve into the dark truths of a place shrouded in terrifying secrets....

Must be an Anna Fields fan

Is there anything you would change about this book?

this author is not for me. good outline, but the story just not expanded enough for me.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

this could have been great if the author added more core romance to the story.

Which character – as performed by Anna Fields – was your favorite?

I purchased as the late great Ms Fields read this story.I hunt down as many of her recordings as I can get. She made all her male heros just so yummy. I have all of her Susan Elizabeth Phillips recordings. It Had to be You is my fave. Hence, I purchased this story as it is set in the Carolinas.

Any additional comments?

If you like an ez listen, with an mystery and no hot romance, then is author is for you

Memories of my youth

Love rereading books I read so very many years ago. Reminds me of where I was and who I was when I first read Phyllis A. Whitney's books.
Anna Fields is one of my favorite narrators!

As good today as when it was written!

Phyllis Whitney gave me my love for gothic novels. Star Flight is a good example of her books. That touch of mysticism and increasing sense of danger adds to a story that is always good to revisit.

Harsh voice narrator

The storyline was marginal and the narrator had a very offensive voice tone.

Holds your interest……

I read several Phyllis Whitney books years ago and recently chose a couple from the plus catalog. Her stories include some plot elements that seem a bit unbelievable but they have all held my interest and include a mystery that keeps you reading.

Odd writing, unpleasant narration

It's rare for me to abandon a book unfinished, but I struggled to get through this one.

The writing was alternately flowery (descriptions of scenery and magical realism) and stilted, especially the dialogue. For example, one of the characters is a "mountain man" (the story is set in the secluded hills and lakes near Asheville, North Carolina), and sometimes he speaks in gruff, ambiguous half-sentences, while at other times he uses formal diction like "My sister told me that I must come to you." Characters are charming and hospitable in one scene, then cold and unfriendly in the next, giving the reader whiplash. The romance aspect of the story is allowed to languish for most of the book, then abruptly resurfaces. There are gratuitous references to UFO sightings. And line after unnecessary line is spent rhapsodizing about kudzu, an invasive plant that's left most of the characters in the story completely smitten. While the mystery did leave me guessing, it wasn't enough to overcome the book's many irritating quirks.

I also had a problem with the audio performance. The first-person narrator character is a young Californian whose mother was likewise raised in California, but Anna Fields speaks with a distinct southern accent. I could overlook that, if (a) she didn't also sound much, much older than the main character, and (b) if her voice didn't have the kind of roughened edge typical of a pack-a-day smoker. If you're an audiobook lover who prefers books read with soothing, mellifluous voices, you'll probably want to avoid this one.

Dianne-san antonio

I REALLY LIKED THE STYLE OF THE INTRODUCTION AND PROLOG… STORIES IN THEMSELVES- I think it gave an intriguing start for the story.. there were a couple places where i felt it could have been less monotonous in the story line but the end was done well. But truly for once in a long time my attention was truly tuned in and the narrator did a great job.

Altogether Satisfying and Timeless

This story doesn't disappoint. It has suspense. romance, quirky characters, beautiful scenery, and a bit of mysticism. No overt sex or over-the-top violence. the book is altogether satisfying and timeless.

A Snoozefest...

I read like 10 books per month, that's how fast I go through them! this one took a WEEK to go through. Truly unremarkable, unoriginal, trivial, predictable, meandering, simply not interesting.
