Sintesi dell'editore

For Kierkegaard, truth is a subjective reality which we must live, not something to simply consider and discuss. His self-consciousness and self-examination highlight the practical demands of existence, and he opposes the speculative thinking of philosophical idealists. Kierkegaard says much of life's meaning depends not on external conditions, but on our internal choices about relating to them. He urges us to live with purpose and emphasizes that our task is not knowing but doing.

In Either/Or, he concentrates on sensual indulgence versus duty and the avant garde versus tradition. In Sickness unto Death, Kierkegaard diagnoses a spiritual disease throughout society: despair. Kierkegaard argues that we are estranged from the source of our very being as we try to escape the moral responsibility of the self.

The Giants of Philosophy is a series of dramatic presentations, in understandable language, of the concerns, questions, interests, and overall world view of history's greatest philosophers. Special emphasis on clear and relevant explanations gives you a new arsenal of insights toward living a better life.

Good Introduction &a Overview

This recording, like the others I have encountered in this series, is an effective introduction to the work of this philosopher (Kierkegaard) and an overview of his life. It places Kierkegaard's primary works within the context of his biography while discussing their ideas. I particularly appreciated their admiring (in a way) that this recording presents one interpretation of Kierkegaard's work. With Kierkegaard, perhaps more than any other author, you must simply read him for yourself and determine how to live any truth you find there. So, if you read this review and listen to this recording, hopefully you will be inspired to read Kierkegaard yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Insight of a Believing Thinker

Where does Soren Kierkegaard rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was the first audiobook I've ever listened to. It was a gift from my niece who knew I loved Kierkegaard.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved getting an introduction to the works that I haven't read. We learn the reasons for the pseudonyms, and the philosophies dealt with in his books.

Which character – as performed by Charlton Heston – was your favorite?

I enjoyed all of his performances. I couldn't pick a favorite.

If you could give Soren Kierkegaard a new subtitle, what would it be?

The Passion of a Follower of Christ.

Any additional comments?

It stirred my heart. There are just snippets of information about Kierkegaards struggles with Hegel, Socrates, and the prevailing Danish Christian Church, but enough to remind you of the tremendous contribution Kierkegaard made to Christian thought. His passionate insistence that we live and not just believe the truth. I loved it!!!

A Philosophical Materpiece

What did you love best about Soren Kierkegaard?

It taught me why philosophy matters.

What did you like best about this story?

His love for Regina and his understanding that subjectivity is more important than objectivity.Allthough tragic the genius that Soren had taught people to look for more than just getting by. This story told me I need to find my purpose and when I do that will be "my" truth, not what everyone else thinks it should be for me.

What about Charlton Heston’s performance did you like?

His calrity and obvious love for the subject matter.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

Truth is what you make of it, not what the world does.

Any additional comments?

Wonderful summary....I listened to it 3 times. His life just fascinated me

Great insight

Great insight on Kierkegaard's life & literary work.
The authors provide a very introductory, dinamyc and yet very representative overview on Kierkegaard's anthology.
This book follows a logical temporal line and has several quotes of the Kierkegaard's book, making it more inflated.
Only constructive criticism, would be to be added a literary summary of the author's pieces, in the beginning or end of this book.

Poor man but not a philosopher like Aristotle

If Soren Kierkegaard had only read St. Thomas Aquinas Summa theologica he could have been great. Nevertheless, his life and works are good to analyze for the instructions and use for those who wish not to fall in such sadness.

Brief but existential

Quick read but pretty good depth on Kierkegaard's contributions to the field. Very thought provoking

A good, brief, introduction.

Enjoyable and covers a broad scope of Kierkegaard's thought but it might be nice to have a little more detail in some places and some more analysis of the text.
