Social Media. You've heard the term, even if you don't use the tools. But just how big has social media become? Social media has officially surpassed pornography as the top activity on the Internet. People would rather give up their email than their social network. It is so powerful that it is causing a macro shift in the way we live and conduct business.

Brands can now be strengthened or destroyed by the use of social media. Online networking sites are being used as giant, free focus groups. Advertising is less effective at influencing consumers than the opinions of their peers. If you aren't using social media in your business strategy, you are already behind your competition. In Socialnomics, you will learn:

  • How the concept of "Socialnomics" is changing the way businesses produce, market, and sell, eliminating inefficient marketing and middlemen, and making products easier and cheaper for consumers to obtain
  • How successful businesses are connecting with consumers like never before via Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and other social media sites
  • How to harness the power of social media, rather than being squashed by it

Author Erik Qualman is a former online marketer for several Top 100 brands and is currently the global vice president of Online Marketing for the world's largest private education firm.

Socialnomics is an essential book for anyone who wants to understand the implications of social media, and how businesses can tap the power of social media to increase their sales, cut their marketing costs, and reach consumers directly.

Solid primer for a newbie; otherwise skip it

If you are new to social media, then this is a good solid primer in how it can affect your life and how the business value chain has reacted to and in the process of reacting to social media. For those of us who are in the tech business, there is nothing new in this book that we don't know. There are a few anecdotical stories of interest but not enough to make it worthwhile for the advanced tech savvy reader. The less technology you know, the more interesting it will be. It is a must read for people with little knowledge of social media and have an interest understanding how this is media affects their work and home lives.

The narration is fine if not a little robotic. There are times during the narrative that you feel the author is going for a Stepford-wife-esq story. Social media is this and that and – OMG, isn’t it great! The author occasionally makes some pretty boneheaded statements. For example, he says “Newspapers should stop reporting the news and start commenting on the news.” I agree more analysis is always good, but I think this kind of statement is a quite extreme. Considering all of this, I still think there is value in this read depending on your level of exposure to the medium.

Having just listened to Free by Chris Anderson I was excited to continue my listening along similar subject matter. Socialnomics seemed to fit the bill.
Unfortunately, the reader sounds like he could be computerized and the style feels like it was written for my mother who has no understanding of what facebook, youtube, or myspace is.
When youtube is mentioned, for example, the author constantly says, "the social media site youtube". We all know it's a social media site.
In addition, the examples are long, drawn out, and repetitive.
Perhaps the hard copy reads better but this was a terrible disappointment.

Good ideas but really bad pacing

The audiobook is of great value to understand the nuances and transformation that social media brings to the table. It only lacks vitality in the readers voice, he sounds bored a lot. Also, the case studies go too long and are not that interested. It could've been half as long easily.

    Overall comprehensive and insightful

At first thought I would give this a 3 out of 5 stars. However it is so comprehensive with regards to social media and the impact it is and will have on commerce and marketing I am giving it a 4 out of 5 stars.

At times I found the author to be right on the mark and quite insightful and at other times I found myself thinking that the incredibly insightful person who wrote the book had been kidnapped, forced to drink the "social media Kool-Aid" and live with Care Bears for 45 days, thus morphing his sense of society.

Having said that, this is absolutely well worth the read. But if you find yourself from time to time thinking "where is this guy coming from?" ignore your apprehension and just read on to the next section, he will come back to reality and it will get good again.

Great insight into social media strategy

Very helpful book giving insight into how to use social media to establish and grow relationships with customers. Not only does it it provide insight into how the younger generation uses it as a tool, it also provides insights into how to develop your own strategy. Great book!

Good overall information, but not actionable

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably, not. If you are looking for a good high-level overview of how powerful social media is, this is a good book for that. If you are looking at steps to take to implement a social media strategy, this is not. I listened to the whole book, but honestly, I found myself waiting for it to be over so I could move on.

This is probably a better book to go with: Inbound Marketing: Get Found Using Google, Social Media, and Blogs

Would you recommend Socialnomics to your friends? Why or why not?

not really. I did not find the information actionable.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    no; would be too boring.

There is a lot of material covered in this book. It is informative and timely. The author, Erik Qualman, is obviously an expert in the topic. He is a trend setter and more importantly he has very well informed opinions about right and wrong approaches to social networking for companies. This could have been a great one.

Erik Qualman covers too many items too many times. They spend too much time on each topic and drive the points into the ground. It is a fine balance between adequate coverage and too much and in my opinion, this one was way past too much. I got tired of listening to it, and it became a personal challenge to finish it.

I have guarded optimism about to reading or listening to him again. I will pick up other works by Erik, because he is so authoritative on the topic.

It will open your eyes to a new world

A really great book putting some light on the need to embrace social media. I am no stranger to social media, but this book was a wakeup call that I need to give it even more attention.

    Would've been better

In general OK and covers the contemporary subjects about social media, but examples are long & narration is boring . Feels like listening to the same things again & again.
