A story of could have been so much...

I tend to listen to anything one Mr R.C Bray narrates as he has the great ability to turn a story I don't naturally gel with into something which is acceptable. That is not to say that there is something below par with this title!

However, I finished listening to this one and felt it could have been so much better! This could easily have been the surprise title of the year for me and I do listen to a lot of titles! It has an element or feel of 'Planet of the Apes' to it. In the sense of 'what has man done?' While at the same time a cowboy and Indian feel with a Wild West theme. It has a mutant, although to tell you the truth I was hoping for a zombie theme.... But don't tell anyone that :-)

But then when I sit down and think about it some more, it could have also been so much worse with those different types of elements contained within. I get the feeling this title could have been so much longer with so much more character development from all of the different parties. I thought it felt like a story made for a movie straight out of the box.

The narration was good, usual R.C. Bray standard. Speed was increased to just 1.25x so no significant impact to your $ per hour calculations.

This one will keep your commute to work from becoming to stressful or boring, but as it stands it is not an outstanding title when it had the chance to be outstanding.

All in all just one out of two thumbs up from this fat man!

Misleading description.

The publishers description of this book needs some work. As in, throw it away and rewrite it.
There is a nuclear war on earth. We have bombers in space that wait for their green light to drop their payloads. One does crash and our main character is left inside, in stasis. When he wakes up there isnt a ton of "survival" to do. There are no mutant beings, just the regular folks surviving and then the outcasts that have been living to close to radiation zones. Those irradiated people are nuts, lack intelligence, and are extremely violent. For me, the main characters back story and "survival" aspect of the book, was more or less useless, and just thrown in there so you can have a man with access to bad ass weapons.
The book was just OK.

I can't wait for the movie!

What did you love best about Sixth Cycle?

It felt cinematic! There was a big, dashing astronaut hero and a tortured soul of a young orphaned heroine, banding together to save society.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sixth Cycle?

Exploring the 'ancient' Earth bunkers and technology with the astronaut from that era

What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?

Great voices and pacing. One of the best!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Skye finding the old friends of her long dead parents

Great book and great narration. That's enough, right? ;)

He is one of the best narrators out there. No complaints.

I can't put my finger on it. I usually devour these types of books. I don't know why I didn't enjoy the story more. I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.

Good performance - tedious story

R. C. Bray's performance of Sixth Cycle is good, though not up to his incredible reading of The Martian.

The book may have something to do with it. Sixth Cycle's post-apocalyptic future is believable enough, but it takes a long time getting there. The main foe - radiation-addled humans lumped together as wastelanders - are one-dimensionally crazed and murderous. They're all subhuman and indistinct from each other.

The main villain's campaign to rouse them in attack on normal humans is reminiscent of Germany blindly following Hitler's leadership into war. The villain is not nearly as convincing. Again, his delusions and behavior are one-dimensional - brain damage seems like a universal cause for everything bad.

The heroic characters reveal very little of their inner life or any subtlety in their motivations. Their story is very much one of good versus evil.

There are a few surprises, but overall Sixth Cycle is a tedious slog through wastelander territory.

Great Story

Would you listen to Sixth Cycle again? Why?

I would listen again because the story was excellent. I wanted to hear more. I could see it in my head like it was a movie. It wasn't over complicated or wordy. There was a good balance of action and character development. I listened to it without getting bored and going to another book. The narrator does good male and female voices that all sound unique. For a person that gets bored easily, it had my attention from start to finish. It kind of reminded my of Fallout 3 ...lol.... Maybe that's why I liked it so much.

This was a very good book. There was a nice twist to this dystopian book. The narrator as always was the best.

A Decent One Off Story

I enjoyed the story as a whole, but I feel that it moved too quickly. R.C. Bray did an amazing performance as always, and really sold the story. I would like to see another book, but I wouldn’t be disappointed if there wasn’t another to come.
