Sintesi dell'editore

Simone de Beauvoir stands as a towering figure in the 20th century's flowering of thought among women. There are probably more women philosophers alive today than in all of prior history, and their perspective brings new ideas and fresh approaches to old problems. We are just now beginning to understand women's unique contribution to philosophical thought.

The World of Philosophy series is a dramatic presentation, in understandable language, of the concerns, questions, interests, and overall outlook of the world's great philosophers and philosophical traditions. Special emphasis on clear and relevant explanations gives you a new arsenal of insights toward living a better life.

Existentialist and feminist

This book, using interesting french-accent for Simone quotes, helped me get a good overview of her thought - enough to form a decent opinion: her original thoughts or feminism is good but her commitment to the Existentialist project with Sartre - that life has no meaning unless you invent it as individual.

Existentialism doesn’t make sense to me and the bar is too high for people to be good and nature and animals isn’t valued much - I guess it made more sense to see us as disconnected from nature (even ours) before we destroyed so much it.

I like the idea that the feminist problem is seeing woman as Other - a second sex - and that it would be better to see woman and man as different or even opposing, but other/lesser/object is where the problem is. So equal in value doesn’t have to mean identical, which sits well with me. I also like the ethical principle: do not see people as ends, your and others freedoms is paramount- but the Existentialists take the illusive freedom concept a bit to far imo.

Great intro to the life and thoughts of a great thinker

This book is a combination of a brief biography and a introduction to Simone de Beauvoir’s thoughts. As a layperson untrained in philosophy I appreciated the fact that the telling of Simone’s life history was well balanced with clear explanations of her thought and works in the context of her life and times. I also appreciated the excerpts that let the listener hear her words directly from her and also excerpts from works that are essential to understanding her work and contribution to philosophy, literature and feminism. Very nice volume for someone wanting to learn more about this fascinating woman.

Excellent intro

A good way to get started with Beauvoir and understand what was the scenario at the time she wrote her books and understand what she meant with her work.

Brief but superb

Having read a bit of philosophy and just finished Blood of Others, I was intrigued to learn more about Simone de Beavoir and this book was well-edited, throughtful and comprehensive.

Bit of a squeeze but a stalwart attempt

Well read, and well built, bringing other voices makes a complex and dense subject easier to follow, this work actually presents one of the best bit size treatments of existentialism and yet it doesn't ignore the difficulties that existentialism presents to those trying to follow it.
