Joel will soon be 12, and he thinks nothing's going on in the small community where he lives. But he's wrong. One day, a miracle happens. He's run over by a bus but somehow comes through it unscathed. He now believes he must repay the favor by doing a good deed. So he decides to find a husband for his friend, a young woman in town who is shy and lonely. He plans to find the best candidate for a husband, and then secretly bring them together, with neither one being the wiser. Even though his heart is in the right place, his plan backfires and his friend's feelings are hurt by the very person he thought would be best for her. Joel feels terrible and knows that he must confess to his elaborate scheme to ultimately make things right.©1990 Henning Mankell. Translation Laurie Thompson 2007. Recensioni della critica

'A concise and questioning narrative that will amply reward reflective readers aged 10 and above.' (The School Librarian)
'Mankell's story always hovers on the edge of magical realism but he suggests that there is no magic as powerful as the imagination of a melancholy child.' (Stephanie Merritt, The Observer)
'Henning Mankell, Swedish author of the outstanding Inspector Wallender mystery series, turns to a young audience is this unusual coming-of-age story. Twelve-year-old Joel has miraculously escaped injury after being run over by a bus. To demonstrate his gratitude, he feels he must perform a good deed. Narrator Francis Greenslade warmly translates youthful joy, disappointment, innocence, and frustration as Joel confronts adults and bullies. His perspective on seemingly illogical adult behavior is hilarious yet childlike. Greenslade perfectly conveys Joel's fantasy life as he becomes a detective and thinks of himself as 'Geronimo' Gustaffson. Joel's simple act of revenge on someone who mocked his best friend is priceless. A richly rewarding listening experience for those of all ages.' (AudioFile Magazine)
