Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven’t thought about - yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level. This ancient secret is fasting: The fastest way to extreme breakthrough. Why fast? Because fasting builds extreme faith, and believers need extreme faith to overcome the impossible.
Nevertheless, if not handled appropriately, fasting could, in some cases, produce adverse effects with some people. It is not a panacea and there could be risks involved.
Fasting, they’d have told you, is a great way to lose weight. It makes sense: eat fewer calories a couple of days a week, and don’t overeat on the others, and you’ll slim down. What’s less clear is the assumption that fasting from time to time can bring other benefits such as avoiding disease, keeping your brain sharp and even letting you live longer. With all this for the price of just a sprinkle of willpower though, surely it’s all too good to be true?
The answer is not straightforward. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the evidence is strongest with type two diabetes - a disease often caused by overeating. The disease means that a person can no longer control their blood-sugar levels.
In its simplest form, fasting is abstaining from all food and drink except water. (Although there is a purer form yet, called "dry fasting".) This is the older definition for fasting and the meaning implied by the ancient teachers, like Hippocrates when he prescribed fasting for health. In our modern-day world, the definition has become more complicated because we often include modified fasting in the definition. Modified fasting allows the addition of other items to the diet besides water, like juice or fruit or other simple, wholesome foods. Technically, these would actually be "diets" and are sometimes called "cleansing diets" or "detox diets", to emphasize the cleansing aspects.
