Chi ha già letto (o, ancor più, ascoltato) la serie di romanzi di Expeditionary Force, non potrà che trovare molti punti di contatto fra le due, non solo nei temi, nel setting e in molti elementi narrativi, ma anche in varie dinamiche fra personaggi, prima fra tutte la coppia leader umano + spalla AI. Il fatto che entrambe le serie siano narrate dal sempre eccellente R.C. Bray non può che accentuare la sensazione di déjà vu, il problema è che in Ruins of the Earth appare tutto sottotono o molto meno convincente, se non proprio stonato.
I personaggi sono spesso stereotipati e a volte snervanti (la succitata coppia in particolare), i siparietti comici sono alla lunga ripetitivi o fuori luogo, la plausibilità di certi elementi e sviluppi lascia a desiderare, e in generale c'è molta meno attenzione per i particolari, tanto che la componente sci-fi risulta spesso solo abbozzata e non particolarmente credibile o organica, così come quella "politica".
Quelli che non mancano sono invece i dettagli maniacali, al limite del feticismo, riguardanti armi e procedure militari, che finiscono presto per risultare eccessivi e ridondanti, appesantendo inutilmente la narrazione.

I really appreciated the mindset of all the human fighters, starting with Wic Patrick Finnegan, a former Ranger, as well as all the main protagonists, whether SEALs or air support. They are positive characters who give up returning to their normal lives just to protect civilians.
I also truly enjoyed the AI from the alien weapon; once freed from alien subjugation, it becomes a great source of banter and information for the humans, much like Skippy the AI from Expeditionary Force. A perfect mix for anyone who wants a breathtaking, non-stop battle experience.
A good mix sci fi if you like things to go Boom
