Sintesi dell'editore

Meet Mulder and Scully, FBI: the agency maverick and the female agent assigned to keep him in line. Their job is to investigate the eerie unsolved mysteries the bureau wants handled quietly but quickly, before the public finds out what's really out there...and panics - the cases filed under "X".

In this ambitious and exciting X-Files adventure, Mulder and Scully fly to the Yucatán jungle to investigate a missing team of archaeologists. Their exploration leads to a strange electronic signal coming from beneath ancient ruins - a signal aimed upward, at the stars.

Not the X-files "feel"

The story, to me at least, seems to never really take off. The bad-guys are presented extremely early in the story line and the commando-squad seems like they're only there to make the ending happen. The whole thing just feels forced, with no real story or development troughout. On top of that I question the narrator's pronunciation of a certain name in the cast, which is hard to get past. Just not my cup of tea I guess. :)

No, This is not a good X-Files Book

Three hours into the story and it is still totally boring. The narrator's overly present voice offers no feeling to the reading. It might not be entirely his fault because the story is so very, very, very slow.

Best original run x-files narrated

Conditional praise! The story itself is pretty engaging and fun, even if the spectacle at the end pushes the bounds of the in-universe a bit. Also, the issues of narration rather than full cast are still present making what would be an excellent adventure into a story that takes a little patience at times but is worthwhile!

Awesome!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

No, I loved it!!

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I loved to connection to the ancient Mayan culture. . The jungle descriptions were amazing.

Which character – as performed by Patrick Lawlor – was your favorite?

Mulder is always my favorite. I love his passion for weird stuff.

Could you see Ruins being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

YES!! This book would make an amazing movie!!

Any additional comments?

I really loved the tie in with one of my favorite TV shows "Ancient Aliens". It made for a fun story and drove Scully a little crazy. Great book!!

good but feels wrong

The story is great but it in no way emulates an episode of the show. This is a big budget movie. Think "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".... but good. It's frankly better then any x-files movie we got. But because of that it ends up not really feeling like the x-files. Also, the plot gymnastics the writer has to go through to keep the statue quo (i.e. Scully not believing in UFO's) strains the readers credulity.

you lost me when u compared My Savior 2 rock music

book facts are incorrect the sermon on the mound was the most impactful sermon the Lord Jesus ever gave enriched more people than anything I've ever known and even more than a stupid song or single that's released on a record I cannot believe he said that records reach more people than the sound on the mound that is the biggest lie I've ever heard in the biggest blasphemous comment ever heard about my savages Christ . was a big X-Files fan until they decided to go on& become blasphemous against my king so we& Savior Jesus Christ. I will no longer be continuing this series of books and I will not be taking any of my precious time I'm watching any more episodes for a very long time maybe never again! 3 you trying to purposely lose fans more and more everyday

Not KJA’s best

There’s a lot of problems with the story, but this may be one of the few times in an x-files story that the aliens were as incompetent as the humans (not including M&S).

Everyone except the ancient alien seems to be able to activate the emergency beacon, so his stranding seems to be an odd story element. The ancient astronaut “theory” is a smidge less offensive than usual, less a question of how an ancient culture accomplished anything without outside help, and more that their exposure stimulated a cultural revolution.

The elder Dr. Rubicon (Vladimir) is hard to empathize with once the characters reach the lost city, as he seems less concerned about his missing daughter’s wellbeing than he is interested in the ruins. The archeologists name... I guess it’s not impossible for someone to have the name Vladimir Rubicon, but it sounds a bit contrived. Cassandra Rubicon? That name works.

I don’t think we met a single intelligent or non-corrupt Latino in the entire story, and zero Latina characters of any kind except for one character’s memories of his mother. Of course, we are dealing with corrupt police and drug lords, but no named Larinx characters that were particularly intelligent and/or not corrupt? The drug lord was smart, but for all his adult self improvement and education, he was no Escobar or Guzman.

The book almost fails the Bechdel test but passes in the last chapters as Drs. Cassandra Rubicon and Scully do talk a bit. I think. It was not particularly memorable.

The special forces major is spectacularly incompetent, never setting a perimeter, never listening to information from people present at the site, with the commanding officer standing around in a firefight waiting to get shot.

Speaking of people with gunshot wounds, Scully, an M.D., though not practicing outside of forensics, never seemed to consider offering first aid to the spec ops teams.

The reader did a good job with a mediocre script, but gave the Mexican characters very unrealistic accents, and the pronunciation of cenote always made me cringe.

Great story! Narration: Meh

I love the story. But in my opinion, the narrator does not do a good job with the different characters’ voices.

Entertaining Alternative

A serviceable spin-off for fans of the X-Files, but it doesn't really amaze. It has all the beats of a typical thriller with the bonus of familiar characters. That said, it doesn't add to the mythos and it is missing a bit of the charm of the TV show.

Good stuff

I'd certainly love to watch this book as an episode. I'm fascinated by ancient Mayan culture. I've always loved this franchise.
