Iranians living near the border with Iraq are accustomed to earthquakes. They live in a region traversed by fault lines, and the destruction that comes when the ground shakes is not something new. And still, no one in this region was ready for the heavy destruction and loss of life that occurred when the ground shook Sunday night.
"Quake Poses ‘Divine Test’ for Iranians" is from the November 15, 2017 World section of The New York Times. It was written by Thomas Erdbrink and narrated by Kristi Burns.
