This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
One Last Lantern is a gentle, second-person sleep story for grown-ups, and the closing chapter of the first volume of The Lantern Hours.

The day is done, and the lane knows it. You are standing on your own doorstep when Odile appears with a small brass lantern — the last one of the evening. She asks you to carry it up the hill and back down again, saying good night to each of the twelve lamps as you pass.

You walk slowly. You stop at the house with the green door, where a family has put down roots. You listen to the ticking of the clockmaker’s window. You hear soup being sung over in an attic. You accept a cup of tea poured twice. You take six warm tomatoes from a greenhouse. You stand outside a nursery where a child is being hummed to sleep. You stroke a serious orange cat while a violin plays one long note. You keep a scrap of leather in your pocket. You smell mint. You eat warm bread.

At the top of the lane you look back at all twelve lamps burning in their long curve of gold. You say thank you. Then you bring the lantern home, open the little glass door, and blow it out.

This is a story about the ordinary kindnesses that carry a day from morning to night, about the quiet dignity of putting the day away, and about the oldest custom there is: carrying a light through the end of the day, and putting it out where you began.
