On a cloudy day in May of 2015, the first student speaker at Howard University’s commencement was a handsome legal communications major named Tyrone Hankerson Jr., whose graduation robe was adorned with a medal, a stole and multiple cords signifying the many honors he’d earned. “As we gather here on the upper quadrangle, I am reminded of the significance of this place,” Hankerson said from the podium. The actor Morgan Freeman, scheduled to receive an honorary degree that day, sat nearby.
