Sintesi dell'editore

Lucy Barton is a successful writer living in New York, navigating the second half of her life as a recent widow and parent to two adult daughters. A surprise encounter leads her to reconnect with William, her first husband—and longtime, on-again-off-again friend and confidante. Recalling their college years, the birth of their daughters, the painful dissolution of their marriage, and the lives they built with other people, Strout weaves a portrait, stunning in its subtlety, of a decades-long partnership.

Oh William! is a luminous novel about the myriad mysteries that make up a marriage, about discovering family secrets, late in life, that rearrange everything we think we know about those closest to us, and the way people continue to live and love, against all odds. At the heart of this story is the unforgettable, indomitable voice of Lucy Barton, who once again offers a profound, lasting reflection on the mystery of existence. 'This is the way of life,' Lucy says. 'The many things we do not know until it is too late.'

Gently true. A meandering tale of us.

Although I have preferred all the more “punchy,” harder edges Strout novels, I guess this tale is a reflection of the past two years’ effect on all of us and perhaps on Lucy Barton as well.
Sad to say it, but while William is around, mustache or not, he WILL have the authority and Lucy will remain largely invisible to him.
My certainty centers on the very powerful characterizations provided.
Sadly I think that the rather tentative voice of the actor reading the text coloured my perception of just how strong Lucy might actually be. Worth a lot of thinking about.

A simple slice of life?

This story is very pertinent for those of us who are in our later years! It’s a non story in a way as it speaks of life’s developments and reflections. But I enjoyed it immensely and the narration was beautiful and completely in accord with the books content. So overall a great nook to listen to. I admit I found Lucy’s anxiety wearing, sloughs understandable, as the characters were all so human so deeply relatable.

A very American story

Kimberley Farr is amazing and IS Lucy. Typical brilliant Elizabeth Strout narrative that deserves 4.5 stars.

Not really my genre

Whilst I recognise that this book is well written, I was never really captivated. I suspect it's because I couldn't identify with any of the characters.

Gloomy,depressing, socially handicapped

It was really painful to soldier on till the very end. I thought that the book was written by a bitter, disappointed in everything, woman. It was depressing and gloomy.
The narration was not what I expected either. It was as if the narrator was on the brink of tears or in physical pain most of the time.
I would definitely not recommend this book and I considered the hours, spent listening, wasted.

Oh Please!

I found this book to be one long, self indulgent, cheesy waste of time. If I had to hear the narrator say “oh William” one more time, I’d scream. And such snobbery ( is this typically American?) about where people came from and how small their parents’ houses were! Awful narration of a truly awful book.

very disappointing to be honest

I didn't manage to finish it. I thoroughly enjoyed Lucy Barton and Olive Kitteridge, but this was tedious and depressing.

A book for a certain kind of reader

I read books by this author and from this series before, it is slow but enjoyable, not riveting… it is just observational and about life !

Need to read this

Listening to rather than reading a book is sometimes a mixed blessing. I often listen while doing some relatively mindless task - decorating a room is a particularly good one. I have rooms that bring back vividly the atmosphere of a book. But I'm glad I have no room for this one!
The excellent narration of Lucy's looking back across the years/phases of her life and particularly the depiction of William1

Charming

Took me a couple of listens to get into the rhythm of this book, then I really enjoyed it. Very charming style, full of verisimilitude, characterisation, a relaxing read. The end kind of crept up on me.
