Sintesi dell'editore

Your God is too small.

We like God small. We prefer a God who is safe, domesticated, who thinks like we think, likes what we like, and whom we can manage, predict, and control. A small God is convenient. Practical. Manageable.

The truth: God is big. Bigger than big. Bigger than all the words we use to say big.

Ironically, many today seem turned off by the concept of an awesome, terrifyingly great God. We assume that a God you would need to fear is guilty of some kind of fault. For us, thinking of God as so infinitely greater and wiser than we are and who would cause us to tremble in his presence is a leftover relic from an oppressive, archaic view of religion.

But what if this small version of God we've created is holding us back from the greatest experience of our lives - from genuine, confident, world-transforming faith?

In Not God Enough, J. D. reveals how to discover a God who is big enough to handle your questions, doubts, and fears; is not silent; is worthy of worship; wants to take you from boring to bold in your faith; has a purpose and mission for you on earth; and is pursuing you right now.

God is not just a slightly better, slightly smarter version of you. God is infinite and glorious, and an encounter with him won't just change the way you think about your faith. It'll change your entire life.

A God Who is not Tame

As I read this book, I kept thinking of a conversation in “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” “Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion"..."Safe?" said Mr Beaver ..."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.”

Greear points out that, many, if not most people, are worshipping a God of their own creation. We have reduced God to what we can understand and we assume that we should be able to understand God and explain his actions. He is speaking to people who have struggled with their faith (and admits to his own struggles) and to people who are too comfortable with their faith. If you are struggling with anger, doubt, despair, disappointment, or worry, it’s likely because the God you believe in has been reduced to someone like you, but just better. If you have no struggles, it is because you have domesticated God. You believe that, if God loves you, then that’s enough. You can relax in your comfortable life--until something happens that makes you uncomfortable.

He also argues that faith is not just belief, but belief that is strong enough to spur action. The Gospel is not a feel-good, success-is-yours kind of Gospel. He decries worship that is more pep rally than worship, that sermons are more like “practical tips for living than encounters with the God who stands beyond time and whose presence is indescribably glorious.” Understanding that should drive us to action.

The book is full of scriptural references, especially to the lives of many in the Old   Testament. God doesn’t revolve around us, but instead our life should  be focused on God’s glory. It’s also full of illustrations. In fact, I sometimes felt that there were too many stories, and that too many of them involved him.

But, it’s a message that is greatly needed.

Doesn’t affirm LGBTQ

Talk about making God really small...the author is non affirming of lgbtq people and non egalitarian for women in ministry.

Pass.

A Top 3 Christian Must Read

I typically do not leave reviews for the books that I read, but JD book rekindled a spirit that longs to believe in a God that is bigger than the box I try to keep him in. This book was written to me so that I can stop limiting God in my heart and mind. I am going to re-listen to this again and purchase hard copies because it was that convicting and inspiring.

Must read for everyone!

Whether a new believer, seasoned believer, or just looking for answers, this book is a must read. J.D. Greear uses his relaxed style of writing to comfortably discuss the difficult topics and add a refreshing spin on some of the topics we have heard so often before. He includes many life experiences and the content is supported by biblical facts. This is a book I will refer to often and may reread every few years.

Very rich on Wisdom

Very rich in wisdom, a “must” in reading this book twice. I love how he was able to weave in his personal stories to make what he was talking about made clearer. I really enjoyed this book

Relationship changer

One of the best books I’ve read. I came into this book thinking my God was big enough, but this book changed my perspective on God. Reading everything and coming to the last line of the book had me tearing up
