Sintesi dell'editore

New York Times Best Seller

The new must-listen epic from master storyteller Ken Follett: more than a thriller, it’s an action-packed, globe-spanning drama set in the present day.

“A compelling story, and only too realistic.” (Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary)

“Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn’t get fixed.” So says Pauline Green, president of the United States, in Follett’s nerve-racking drama of international tension.

A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert; a stolen US Army drone; an uninhabited Japanese island; and one country’s secret stash of deadly chemical poisons: all these play roles in a relentlessly escalating crisis.

Struggling to prevent the outbreak of world war are a young woman intelligence officer; a spy working undercover with jihadists; a brilliant Chinese spymaster; and Pauline herself, beleaguered by a populist rival for the next president election.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding story that transports listeners to the brink of the unimaginable.

I'll NEVER get through this one

As a diehard fan of anything Follett, I'm heartbroken over this new novel. I made it through about SEVEN hours (that I'll never get back) and threw in the towel. In order to understand what on earth is going on, you are going to need a world map and a place to make many notes because there are SO many characters with names and titles that are confusing to "average" me. There are also a couple of characters that have almost identical names ... which leads to even more confusion (why do authors do this? They do it all the time!!!) Follett is my all-time favorite author and I've read everything he ever wrote, many more than once, but I have no interest in this one. I gave up when somewhere in China somebody met with someone who had the name of something and worked under someone else with the title of something and had the name of something who was under the the department called something who was headed by some other individual ... all with Chinese names. All of these people were brought into the story in two sentences. I guarantee by the time I got to this point, 40-50 characters had been introduced. The book also brings to light the social injustices of the world (especially the US) because, honestly, no one has covered that in any novels, right? No one can drive and listen to this. Note taking will be needed.

Very Boring not as advertised.

From the description you would expect a lot of action and intrigue however it's 90 percent social justice topics and romance. I tried really hard but I couldn't finish it.

Sorry ... Really like Follett, but

Way to much "right place, right time". Apparently 1 CIA agent is all that's needed to stop car bombings, shoot outs and get all the necessary Intel. Doing this as a female, with a female General and a female POTUS is way to feminine. I'm not anti female...but Follett goes OVERBOARD with this. Embarrassingly so.

The female reader is a tough listen. Not top quality, and with a book this long that's a major strike against.

The story line ...Without every smart, brave character being a female and every nefarious, unintelligent character being a man...Isn't bad. Just should have changed a couple of the sexes. And hired a better reader.

Did Ken Follet really write this?

Ken Follet is by far my all time favorite author.
I have been reading his books for 33 years. I have read the Pillars series at least 6x and the Century Trilogy 3x. I have read most of his other books as well.

Not 1ce during this entire book did I think I was listening to something Ken Follet wrote.

I don't know anything about anyone's pubic hair, no man's throat went dry, there wasn't 1 single described act of sex. Which is unlike every other book he has ever written.
I didn't learn anything. not how to build a cathedral, or even an arched doorway. I didn't learn how people manipulate their way into power when they don't have the ability to do it honestly.
I didn't learn anything about any country. I didn't learn any war tactics, or military plans.
I didn't love or despise even 1 of the characters.

I couldn't see them in my mind. I didn't feel any of their feelings. I am not even sure what any of them looked like.

How is it possible the president of the USA learned her daughter was smoking pot via some round about taddle tale delivered to the school principal rather then via the CIA or security guards?

It just doesn't seem like a book by Ken Follet

Quality Excellent, Story great and then ….

I love Ken Follett’s books. I’ve never read one I didn’t like. This story was great in the beginning - and the characters were believable - as was most of the story, but the last quarter of the book was just inconceivable - bordering on hysterical thinking. And the end…was…just like he got tired of writing. I guess I don;t blame him.

Disappointed

I’m a huge Ken follett fan. I preordered this book, which is something I would normally never do. After suffering through 5 hours I took a look at other reviews. It sounds like the book doesn’t get any better. Very disappointed.
