Sintesi dell'editore
When a disabled veteran takes a new job as an attorney in a small Wyoming town, he is thrust into a mysterious murder case.
Sam Johnstone was hoping for renewal when he took a job at a boutique law firm in rustic Wyoming. The mountains and streams of the West would be a refreshing, quiet place to start over after years of war and turmoil in his personal life.
But after a local woman is brutally murdered, Sam realizes that things aren’t so quiet in this rural American town. The accused is one Tommy Olsen, a known delinquent who had been sleeping with the victim. Sam is repulsed by the crime and wants nothing to do with the case but meets with Tommy to make sure he has legal representation. Yet things are not as they seem.
What begins as a cut-and-dry case becomes infinitely more complicated as new facts are uncovered, and Sam agrees to serve as Tommy’s defense attorney. With the killer’s identity still unknown, Sam is enveloped in the small-town politics and courtroom drama of a murder investigation that keeps getting more shocking.
But if Sam can’t uncover the truth, an innocent man might be punished...while the real killer watches from the shadows.

Educational
The author was clearly educating the novice audience with a good story which engaged readers. It got tedious at times, but his purpose was honorable. Those conversations would really not happen in the manner the early chapters depicted. But he’s a good author and will likely vary his manner in the future writings.

Don’t quit too soon
The narrator takes getting used to. Good story, but it took a while for the narrator to develop the characters. Once the story got rolling, the book was quite enjoyable.

Amateurish and ridiculous but engaging
I did like the main character, Sam, a Vet and lawyer, and the detective. There were lengthy and realistic courtroom scenes, but many unnecessary, dragging out the story for no good reason. Unfortunately, the resolution was unbelievable in many respects. And there were a couple threads established early and dropped, suggesting a change in plans by the author. Oddly, time was spent on unnecessary characters and scenes with not enough attention to investigation, clues, and what you’d expect from an attempt to realisticaly handle the case. As a result, the last quarter of the book was rushed and terrible, and I found it exasperating.

Good but predictable
The real killer is hinted at in the first part of the book and we know the suspect is innocent. But we have to wait for long speeches by lawyers and a wrong conviction to finally get to it.

Story was ok.
I certainly wouldn’t describe this as an intelligent read, or intelligently written. The characters and their conversation all seemed a little dumb. The court room scenes were fairly childlike.
The narrator was terrible. He really detracted from the experience and his style of reading is also very dumb, his character voices were unintelligent and slow, he made them all sound really stupid. Even when narrating passages that were descriptive rather than conversations he managed to sound really unintelligent. I really cannot abide that style of American audible reader. I’ll definitely not bother listening to anything else he reads.
Overall the story was ok, I won’t be hurrying to get the next in the series or any other book by this author.
