"I trusted you, Caity."

The still of the night is once again shattered by Caitlyn Cahill’s recurring nightmare - her brother standing before her, gripping a - butcher knife, his eyes black with hatred. Two years ago, the former Washington, DC, socialite defied her powerful senator father and risked the ruin of her family by helping the FBI link her troubled brother to a string of horrific murders. The "Capital Killer" was sent to prison for life - and Caitlyn’s entire world fell apart.

Now FBI agent Reid Novak is forced to rend the peace Caitlyn has found on a rural Virginia horse farm. A copycat killer is on the loose and slowly toying with Caitlyn - his ultimate target - in a terrifying cat-and-mouse game. Almost destroyed two years ago by Caitlyn’s family, not to mention the Capital Killer’s haunting final murder, Reid vows to save the woman he’s never forgotten - or die trying.

"The fast-paced, well-planned plot will keep readers hooked. Caitlyn and Reid are intriguing, multidimensional characters who are easy to identify with, and the relationship that develops between them folds nicely into the suspense." ( RT Book Reviews)

A Romance Disguised as a Thriller

Absolute garbage. The voice the narrator chose as the lead female sounds like a baby, the author chose to make her an idiot with males making decisions for her like she's a special needs child.

I wanted to quote some of the "Harlequin-esque" like passages but neglected to note the times and I just could not go back to look for them... couldn't do it.

If you like ridiculous romance and soft porn mixed in with your "thrillers" then you'll love this book. As for me, this was just horrible in so many ways. The only reason I finished it was so I could complain about it since I had guessed the real killer early on but, even complaining about it seems about as much of a waste of time as listening to it.

Terrific for a car drive! Wonderful narrator!

If you could sum up Midnight Fear in three words, what would they be?

Classic Entertaining Suspense

What was one of the most memorable moments of Midnight Fear?

I loved the suspense and the fast pace. It is certainly a formulaic mystery and I wasn't wholly surprised by the twists. (I won't spoil by giving details.) But things happen so quickly and there isn't time to get too far ahead of the plot.

I really really liked this narrator and am surprised another review made such a point to say they disliked her. (Remind them of someone?)

For me, she gave life to the book and the characters which would otherwise have been a little two dimensional.

The author throws a romance in for the protagonists that doesn't work for me. But I appreciated her attempt to give depth to these wounded people. Again, I think the narratotion helped me care more than I would have.

Which character – as performed by Caroline Shaffer – was your favorite?

I got a kick out of the reporter. I won't give more than that because there are so many ways to spoil the suspense!

Any additional comments?

It's hard to write a review of this without giving it away. So I'll just say that it's fun and not too taxing. Good for a road trip...

Excellent Story

The story was excellent as usual. I highly recommend any of Leslie Tentler's books. But the narration did make this one a bit difficult. It was mostly the extensive pauses that bothered me. However, I stuck it out because I wanted to finish the story and eventually I guess my ears adjusted because I stopped noticing the pausing. But it took several hours of listen time to get to that point. The story was definitely worth it though.

wasted time

I cannot give this book any kind of rating. I had to restart it over 5 times because I couldn't stand the narrator. Have no idea if the book is good or not. Just couldn't get past the 3rd chapter. The narrator's long pauses at the end of each sentence was so annoying and her over exaggeration made it seem like a children's book. wasted time.

Just okay

Enjoyed the other book in the Midnight series much more than this one. Story and romance got bogged down at times. I am usually not picky about narration but thought the narrator did not do a good job of distinguishing male and female voices. Good surprise twist at the end

Tentler is a good story teller.

While the story was good, the narration was not good.
Others were better narrated.

Not the best one

I’m not sure if the performance of the narrator made the story weak or what. The narrator kept pausing throughout the story, as if she had to pause at every new paragraph. Also, her inflections in the reading made the characters seem unemotional and as though they didn’t know each other; to the end. I’m not sure if this is considered a YA book and due to the performance I’m not sure if even they could make it through. I did due to the author.

Narrative is horrible

The ridiculous pausing is horrible. It's hard to tell if the sentence is ending or the chapter. couldn't even get through the opening

Good story, ok narration

It’s not my favorite book of all time, but it kept me occupied, and it was richer in characterization and back story than I anticipated. I’m certainly willing to listen to more in this series, though I’m hoping for a different narrator.

The story was better than I expected. While I guessed whodunnit before the reveal, it wasn’t immediately obvious. It was consistent with the characterization prior to the reveal though.

The narration was ok, but not great. Interestingly, the descriptive and narrative passages were very well read. So we’re the supporting characters. It was the main characters’ voices that put me off. She sounded like a little girl, and he sounded like a young woman. I know some men have higher voices, and that’s fine. But it was as though the narrator kept forgetting she was voicing a male character. It was very odd.

Good story

This is a good story with a good plot with twists. The narrator needs some work. Accents falter at times.

I’m afraid the odd narration style detracts

The story starts off well but due to the weird narration style I can’t listen past chapter one! The tone and accents used are fine but she starts off with long pauses between sentences or races breathlessly and not because of some action. I find it too distracting
