Issy is an artist but the world doesn't know it yet.
As someone who self-identifies as 'gay and depressed', Issy keeps her life in Margate small: her mum, her chinchilla, her reliable routine.
So when she is offered her dream job at an artist's studio, Issy knows it's time to open herself up to more.
Moving to East London, Issy has a lot of firsts to catch up on - navigating a crush on her gorgeous housemate, dating, sex, and obsessing over her boss who she just can't seem to figure out.
As pressure mounts, people keep telling Issy she can do anything she sets her mind to. But what if her mind refuses to cooperate . . . ?

Heartbreaking, hopeful, funny. Rarely have I rooted so hard for a character. I loved it!
I adored Making It. Brilliantly and truthfully rendered friendships, flirtations and workplace dramas . . . But it's also a truly nuanced, sensitive and warm-hearted portrait of living with mental illness
Hopeful and hilarious, gentle and wise . . . with squeal-out-loud romantic lines that had me swooning
Making It is a masterful love letter to queer joy. It's witty, uplifting, and tackles tricky situations with a wonderfully warm touch. Laura's talent shines on this one. She really is the future of queer romcoms
Kay is an auto-buy author for me. Making It is tender, wonderfully funny and desperately human
Hooray! The queen of queer romcoms is back . . . this witty, moving and ultimately life-affirming novel is about love, friendship and finding yourself
A gorgeous feel-good romcom that brought back all the feels I felt when I first left home. Issy is an adorable, warm and relatable character. She's a talented artist who suffers from depression and often feels out of synch with the world and her peers. But she falls in love with the world and everything that's out there . . . as well as her stunning flatmate...
Making It is the perfect coming-of-age-when-you-leave-home novel. And I wish I could have one of her knitted chinchillas . . .
Making It is the perfect coming-of-age-when-you-leave-home novel. And I wish I could have one of her knitted chinchillas . . .
This book is a masterpiece! It's a sensitively drawn, powerful portrayal of queer life with mental illness and finding a way out through creativity. It's funny, uplifting and romantic, plus no one does queer friendships like Laura Kay. I know I say this every time but this is DEFINITELY her best book yet!
A heartwarming new novel from the author of Wild Things and The Split
