But the ship does not sink and Jim survives to face an official inquiry. He is stripped of his license and faces universal scorn and the reality of his own guilt. His need for atonement drives him to one of the most remarkable adventures imaginable. Jim finally recovers his self respect, though even as "Lord" Jim, he cannot quite escape his past.
