Sintesi dell'editore

When three siblings return to their hometown for their estranged father’s funeral, burying the ghosts of the past proves to be impossible in this chilling story by the author of Mysterious Skin.

Forty years ago, triplets Miriam, Louise, and Edward were swept up in a case of rural mass hysteria. Coerced into fabricating unspeakable lies about their first-grade teacher and her adult son, they were complicit in destroying two lives. Ever since, they have believed they are being followed by a presence still seeking retribution for their childhood sins. Unless their guilty consciences are conjuring as many monsters as their innocent minds once did.

Loam is part of Disorder, a collection of six short stories of living nightmares, chilling visions, and uncanny imagination that explore a world losing its balance in terrifying ways. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single disorienting sitting.

Not for Animal Lovers! Very twisted

This is NOT for people who love animals. I like Dark mystery thrillers but this was sick and twisted. I never turn off a book, but I couldn't listen anymore. There should be some kind of disclaimer.

What the heck

It was good and then it just ends. Literally just ends! I am very disappointed.

Needs Robots

Story was so-so. But the performance is by a male narrator who tries to sound like s sad old woman, and I know I will probably be banned for using "gendered" terms like "male" and "woman", but this whiny pitch was very hard to listen to. I wish audible would allow an option for an automated robotic voice, their human "emotional" narrations are so irritating.

Interesting and creepy

This story asks what might have happened to the children at the center of the “satanic panic” events as they became adults. How might it shape a life to carry unresolved guilt about something one did as a child? What if the consequences were far beyond your control?

And what can a community’s collective hysteria and guilt will into being?

It’s an interesting place to begin a story. And this story has such rich characters, it’s too bad it’s so short. As much as I love short fiction, this feels like the author has so much more to say. I’d love to see this grow into a novel.

For those worried about “animal abuse:” it’s in regard to an allegation about an event that didn’t happen, and it isn’t told in any detail. It’s not graphic, and it’s not the main focus of the story.

Wow…this one got me

I’m not sure what made this so creepy…there were so many subtle moving parts: the triplets in mourning…kinda, the car trip, the stop at the antique shot and the find there, the teacher and her son, the witch-hunt, the funeral….maybe the truth that was there or not there. This is the kind of dark creepy that I love…very well told.

Entertaining but forgettable

No issues with the narration. Was worried about the mention of animal cruelty, but was pleased that it was only minimal. Biggest gripe is that the story didn't delve into the horror enough, which made it forgettable. It more so hints at psychological impacts of traumatic events.

I remember when satanic panic was happening...

The story was okay, I wish author had a better & definite ending though? There were alot of unanswered questions. If I had to describe the ending, it was kind of like letting the air out of a balloon.

Pointless

I tried to get into this and enjoy it. I listened to the end but at the end I felt like it was just a waste of time. It just was a pointless story with no real answers or ending.

The summary is hyperbole at its best.

A complete waste of 90 minutes. I only continued listening because I was otherwise occupied and figured I would see it through. Perhaps the reader deserves more than 2 stars but he definitely lent nothing to the redeem the story.

The story... Boring and anything but mysterious, eerie or thought provoking.

Sadly, I believe I'll pass on the related titles.

Disturbing brave and brilliant

A brilliant and brave story because of its subject matter. Only one other story made me so squirmy. That was Rose Madder by Stephen King. Unlike Mr Kings story I ploughed on through to the end on this one. There’s no incredible or unexpected destination here, this story is about the journey. Enjoy this journey and I’ll head off to check this author out for my next one. Perfect narration

Dull and creepy in a non horror way

There was clearly a minimum time limit the author of this book had to reach. A lot of words used but no story told. Characters were unconvincing and it felt like a very wishy washy imitation of a nightmare on elm street and IT.
