Sintesi dell'editore

Communing with spirits has been both gift and curse to Emme Walters. Now it's made her a killer's target. Emme knows why the Dowager Duchess of Briarleigh invited her to a house party--to investigate whether the duke, Rhys Brammel, murdered his wife years ago. But Emme never imagined she would fall in love with the brooding duke. Branded by society as a possible killer, Rhys is suspicious of Emme and her alleged "gift." Then a late night encounter creates awareness of her other, more attractive, aspects. When Emme's life is threatened, Rhys becomes her protector. Emme and Rhys find passion and peril as they join forces to solve the mysteries at Briarleigh. She made him believe in spirits, but can she make him believe in love?

a-freaking-mazing!

Would you listen to The Haunting of a Duke again? Why?

YES!! an amazing mix of romance, mystery, suspense, and paranormal

What other book might you compare The Haunting of a Duke to and why?

hmm- i guess maybe the house on tradd street by karen white- though that is modern day- this is not. both are a mix of romance, mystery, and paranormal

What does Lillian Yves bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the accent. she just read it well and made it enjoyable to listen to.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

i LOL, i cried a bit. a just really liked the characters, a lot and the plot.

Any additional comments?

this is a really unique story- it is not like anything i have read before. i really really would love to read the other books- get to know the secondary characters as main characters in their own books.

Great Mystery and Romance!

I have listened to several books by the author, Chasity Bowlin, and enjoy her style. The narrator, Lillian Yves was new to me. This book has so many facets that pulled me from murder, medium, and romance. The "darkness" in the book is not near as dark as I thought it would be. The twists and turns in this story were outstanding. I had not figured out who the killer was until it was revealed, which is an aspect that I love! My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review.

Suspenseful paranormal romance

Any additional comments?

This story is suspenseful, entertaining and full of mystery. I like that the characters are practical and logical in tricky situations (that's always refreshing). The blooming attraction between Emme and Rhys is romantic. The paranormal aspect of the story adds an interesting dimension to what might otherwise be a predictable romance. The narration by Lillian Ives is good. She does a great job with distinguishing character voices and bringing out each distinct personality. This is an interesting and suspenseful romance.

Regency with a Twist

I really enjoyed the mix of historical romance, mystery, suspense and the paranormal in this book. I’ve been a romance reader since Nora was a fledgling Harlequin author and, I have to say, I’m a little jaded. So it’s really enjoyable to me when I can find a new author and well written story that entertains me throughout. Not once did I skip ahead before deciding to go thru the middle parts. Even though mediums and seances didn’t really gain popularity until the Victorian era, Bowlin still made it work in the context of the story.
Yves does a creditable job with the narration.
This one is a recommend for an enjoyable time out.

Mystery mixed with romance mixed with paranormal

I was expecting a dark romance but the romance in this book was not dark, the darkness in the story is separate.

I thought that the three genre's were well mixed and made this more than a typical historical romance. The ghost aspect was well done and seemed well balanced between being a key plot point and not being over done.

I liked Emme as a person, she was quite remarkable for the time period, and her strength of character was a welcome theme in this book.

The narrator did a great job with the character voices, however I wasn't a fan of the delivery, the phrasing came across as odd to me with pauses mid sentence, perhaps for emphasis, however I fund it annoying and distracting as it sounded unnatural.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Had Me Hooked!

Emme Walters was invited to visit Briarleigh for one reason, to discover if Rhys, the Duke of Briarleigh, murdered his wife. Rhys' mother is desperate to clear her son's name and prove that his wife's death was suicide and not murder. Although Emme publicly denies it, she is able to speak to the spirits of the dead. Rhys' mother hopes that Emme can discover the truth.

In the past, Emme's gift, or curse, has only worked while she slept. But the spirits at Briarleigh are so strong they can appear to her during the day. One spirit threatens to harm her, and another warns her of danger from the living. Rhys is attracted to Emme, but wary of her gift, but these conflicting emotions are all cast aside when Emme's life is at risk.

This book had me hooked from the beginning! I found excuses to keep working so I could continue listening. It was a great blend of suspense and romance, ratcheting up the tension and then easing off to enjoy time with Rhys and Emme. It's a steamy romance with plenty of heat, and they had great chemistry together. I really enjoyed the secondary characters and would like to see more of Michael and Larissa. The mystery itself was really good, and I loved the mix of Regency romance and Gothic horror. Overall, a great listen.

The narration was done well, Lillian Yves is very easy to listen to. She performed accents and voices for the characters and immersed me in the story. I received a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Fantastic Historical Love Story with Spirits and Woman Who Connects With Them

This is my second book by this author and I will read everything she writes and hope all are put in audio! A family curse or talent, depending on how it’s perceived has Emme invited to a house party in the country. A death of the duke’s (Rhys) wife and possible murder or suicide has the duke’s mother inviting Emme to commune with her spirit to ‘right’ his reputation. He is cynical, Emme dislikes her unintended abilities yet they have a connection that cannot be denied.
Emme is approached by a spirit, but it’s not the wife but the dukes sister who was murder when a child years ago.
Emme is a warm and loving woman, Rhys is a good yet cautious man as he was forced to marries his wife because his brother died and she was faithless and cruel. Mysteries of the two deaths, Emma’s walking in the night when possessed by a spirit put her and Rhys in a compromising position.
Both are attracted and love without be sure they can tell the other.
Wonderful secondary characters both good and bad, those with guilt and those looking for revenge.
The mystery of who is the murderer and what happened...what will put the spirits at rest...and some wonderful love scenes make this a fantastic book.
The narrator was fantastic with the voices, the emotion, the timing...she totally pulled me into the story and I couldn’t stop listening.
Buy this authors books! Get the audio to this book as well as the one other book I am aware has been done..I loved that one also.
Worth a credit! History, love, murder, mystery, wonderful characters what’s not to love!

Good Mystery, Strong Characters

I have to say that I purchased this book back in early 2015 but never got around to reading it, the reason I left it alone was because of some poor reviews. All I can say is that after listening to this version I don't know what they were talking about.

The main characters in the book are Rhys, the Duke of Briarleigh, and Emme. Emme is at a weekend house party being thrown by the Dowager Duchess, she has been invited because it is believed that she is able to commune with spirits. Rhys does not want here there but his mother, the Dowager, has invited her together with her aunt because she wants Emme's help to find out how Rhys's late wife died. Many people believe that Rhys murdered her.

Emme does not really want to be there her gift, if one can call it that, is not something she likes to be asked about. It takes the form of spirits leading her to clues whilst she sleeps. This is embarrassing because during these episodes she sleepwalks and has no knowledge of where she goes or what she does.

On the first evening at Briarleigh she wakes to find herself in the dungeons beneath the main house wearing only her nightrail. As she is trying to get back to her room she is discovered by Rhys. He helps her to get back to her room and despite his suspicions of her he behaves like a perfect gentleman. The attraction he feels towards her is very strong but he doesn't trust her motives and asks his best friend and confidant Michael to keep a close eye on her whenever he can't.

It doesn't take long for Emme to be embroiled in not one but two mysteries/murders which have happened at Briarleigh, but whilst trying to get to the bottom of them Emme and Rhys are compromised and end up getting speedily married. The attraction between them is very strong and it is not a hardship for them to marry. Despite the disparity in their stations Rhys is feeling the happiest he has for a long time. Their relationship is very satisfying for both of them and it is not long before this blushing virgin is an experienced and loving wife.

But there is a killer about and his target is Emme.

The characters are very well drawn and the chemistry is very good. The mystery element of the story is very well done and I personally had to keep listening to try and figure out who the killer was, I didn't though it came as a surprise. There are several characters introduced into the story one of them being Emme's sister who also has an unusual gift! I wonder if one of the books in the series will be about her or Michael perhaps?

Overall I have to say that I enjoyed this story, the chemistry and the mystery elements were well written and I thought that the narrator Lillian Yves did a very good job of bringing all the characters to life. Because of the sexual content in the story, in my opinion, this book is only suitable for an adult audience.

This review is written voluntarily and is my own personal opinion.
