For a Light Romantically-inclined Time out

Good if you want a romantically-inclined book set in May, 1894, Oklahoma. Cy gets recruited as a detective in Chase City due to his previous Pinkerton experience; and he needs the pay to help support his family’s ranch. He also needs a ranch manager and decides to find a mail order bride with experience- two birds....
Very light sex.
Smith’s voice fits the character of Cy; it’s not deeply masculine, but definitely a “guy”. It really fits a modern storyline.

Wonderful

This was a very good book. Hated to get to the end but that just makes you long for the next one. Your heart goes out to the hurt that Cyrus and his family have battled through.

Unique Twist on Run-Of-The-Mill Mail-Order Bride

🗸 Cyrus Decker is trying to live a simpler life as a rancher with his siblings. His unconventional detective style had ended his former career as a lawman. However, even with his full-time attention the ranch requires more money and know how.

He discovers an unconventional way to solve his ranch/farmer lack of knowledge, place an ad for a mail order bride who isn't afraid to work and has farming in her background. That doesn't solve his money problem, but the Chance City Sheriff has a solution for that, badgering Cyrus to join the force at every turn. When a young woman is found murdered, Cy reluctantly joins up for the intrigue and the regular pay.

How will his intended feel about becoming the ruler of his domain? How will the others in his family adjust? Will Cyrus and Leigh work out as a business arrangement? Does he dare for more?

The performance by Jay R Smith was average to good. I liked the speed and Smith's voice, but there were times that I felt he was reading – rather than performing – because the inflection seemed to come in odd places. I think that that is something he will improve with time and experience. 3.75 stars

This is a perfect book for those who like romance, mystery, intrigue, dogs! There is a constant dialogue of racism between the Comanche and a few members of the white community. Taking all of these into consideration and depending on a parent's feelings on the amount of exposure on the topic of racism, I think this book would be appropriate for much younger audiences – did I mention the dogs? – as well (unless I missed a detailed steamy scene.)

A unique twist on the Mail Order Bride, historical western. 4 stars

Credit worthy? I would spend the out-of-pocket $5 or less (2017 price) and save the credit for a more expensive book.

A different take on the Mail order bride plot

This book was an interesting and different take on the Mail order bride plot. The characters were appealing and interesting.

The book was a combination of romance and mystery, with little emphasis on either. The book touched on prejudice against Cherokees, the difficulties of ranching in dry country, law enforcement and family values. However it lacked development and depth in any of these areas.

The book was appealing in many ways, but needed more in depth character development.

A Kept Secret..

The story line centers around the female lead, Leigh, and the male lead, Cyrus.

Cyrus needs a lot of help ranching and Leigh is the one to help because she is a widow who love ranching.

Overall, a Good Read that covered everything from ranching, family, friends, Native Americans, and a Mystery.

Jay R. Smith did well with the narration.

Mail Order Mystery

Mail Order Mystery: Chance City Series, Book 1
: Robin Deeter

This mail order bride book blends romance with murder mystery, law vs. ranching, prejudice, and more. Both the male and female protagonists have things from their pasts that might keep them apart. Family is everything. Will love grow? I like the strong female characters. The ending left room for the next book in the series.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Jay R. Smith was a bit speedier than most narrators, not that I'm complaining. I like a faster pace.
