The story itself is engaging and enjoyable, but unfortunately, it was completely ruined by the narrator’s performance.
The narrator actually has a pleasant voice and does a wonderful job with the descriptive passages. However, things go completely downhill when he tries to imitate the voices and accents of non-native characters. First of all, it makes no sense: this is a translation from Turkish, where Turkish characters are speaking Turkish and French characters are speaking French—why would they speak with broken or caricatured foreign accents in the audiobook? More importantly, using exaggerated caricatures for people who don't speak fluent English feels insensitive and offensive. Speaking a foreign language is a sign of courage, not something to be mocked. It’s a real shame that such a compelling story was ruined by a narrative choice that is both illogical and disrespectful.
