Archaeologist Faye Longchamp-Mantooth has dug herself a deep hole, and she can't make her way out of it. Instead she's out digging holes all over her home, the Florida island of Joyeuse.
In their old plantation home, Joe Wolf Mantooth is surrounded by family - Faye, the wife he loves; their toddler son he adores; and his father, who hasn't gotten around to telling Joe how long he's been out of prison or how he got there - yet Joe has never felt so helpless or alone.
Then a close friend at the local marina is brutally murdered, the first in a string of crimes against women that rocks Micco County. Joe, desperate to help Faye, realizes she is in danger from both her inner demons and someone who has breached the island's isolation. Local law and environmental officials say they want to help, but to Faye and Joe they feel more like invaders. A struggling Faye reaches back over a century into her family's history for clues. And all the while, danger snakes further into their lives, threatening the people they love, their cherished home, even the very ground - some of it poisoned - beneath their feet.

Weakest story in series
The story relies too heavily on angst and dread. The mood is morose at beginning of story and gets worse from there with apparent stalker of women. There’s too little coherent story and too much ‘terror’ that something bad is about to happen. Since the adult characters frequently make foolish choices to put their safety at risk, I don’t think this series is good for teen readers. In the last book, Faye and her friends three times choose to be in the same dark closed room (for a ‘seance’) with suspected murders. And in this story, she goes alone to private home of two suspects, For a ‘smart’ character she makes astonishingly bad choices.

We need more Faye stories
The information that is interwoven in each story is priceless. I hope miss Evans doesn’t think there is nowhere else to go with Faye joe and co., bc I am looking forward to her children carrying the torch far into miss Evans writing career!

Great series to listen to with the whole family!
Delightful series. Great characters and interesting to learn about archaeology, history and ancient medical practices. I love learning this way! Will definitely continue listening to the rest of the books in this series.

Least favorite of the series
This book was difficult to get through, normally I read or listen to these over a couple of days. This one I actually ignored for a while because of the story. The relationship issues are extreme, and perfect Joe comes across as a dullard. The killer’s motive is a stretch, and the extent of their actions doesn’t make since for a character that is intelligent enough to find a new victim if the current one happened to get away. I can’t go into detail because of spoilers. I will not revisit this book again, and hope the rest are better.

Her books continue to amaze me.
Mary Anna Evans weaves the most interesting stories and still manages to tie up all the loose ends. I love her characters and the tidbits of historical facts which fit so perfectly into her plots.

Another Fantastic Faye Longchamp Novel !!!
Mary Anna Evans has Done it Again with another Amazing Novel in this series !!
I so Love Historical Mysteries and the list of Characters just keeps getting better and better !!
These snivels keep you enthralled the whole way thru .

Slow start, Good finish
This book was a bit different from the previous books in the series. Faye wasn't quite Faye, there's a bit less archaeology, but more history. Isolation started off slow and I wasn't sure I'd finish it. However, the ending was action-filled and made up for the slow beginning. I didn't care much for the previous book, so I'm glad this one was better read. Not a fan of the adopted daughter, so I'm glad she wasn't in this book. But I am glad (SPOILER) Joe's father was introduced.
