Sintesi dell'editore

Originally published in the 16th century, this is the classic history of the lives, sufferings, and deaths of the early Christian martyrs. As interesting as fiction, it is written with both passion and tenderness, telling the dramatic story of some of the most thrilling periods in Christian history. Foxe brings to life the days when "a noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid, climbed the steep ascent of heaven, amid peril, toil, and pain."

After The Bible itself, no book so profoundly influenced early Protestant sentiment as the Book of Martyrs. Even in our time it is still a living force. It is more than a record of persecution. It is an arsenal of controversy, a storehouse of romance, as well as a source of edification.

Truely a Great Book

"Foxe's Book of Martyrs" Tells of the lives and often times the deaths of men, women and children persecuted during the Reformation. This book tells the story of Christians eagerly willing to give their all not to forsake Christ- the one who redeemed them.

Today in the news we often hear about the "bravery" of those in our modern society (often politicians) who claim to "speak truth to power". This "bravery" is done at no risk to themselves or anyone else. Contrast this modern bravery to "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" where we learn of the lives of those in the 1600's who really did speak truth to power.
Through these martyrs efforts the world changed in a radical way.

I believe "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" communicates the the faith, passion and love of God of these Christians in a profound way. "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" is truely a great book.

This edition has been edited for the modern ear.

Bad Recording

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The recording is bad, many times you will hear clicks and stutters in the reading.

A nightmare of real history

The most terrifying truth of this nightmarish book is that it is true history. Will listen to again.

A Glimpse into the past....

This was a great book, a real look at what life was like 500+ years ago.
It saddened me that the church was very cruelly treated and in many cases martyred. And as I have noticed, over and over again, that when people come into power, they often treat their ex aggressors the same way they were treated, and as is clear from the many stories from this book, when the (Catholic) church came into power, they were as ruthless as the Roman Empire had been to the early Christians.

Thank you to the narrator too.

Where has true Christian Leaders gone?

Listen to this book and then ask yourself how do we as Christian leaders match up. We ought to be ashamed and should prayerfully repent.

So we never forget!!

A must read for all Christian's. History that does not get taught anymore. This is a good book to add to a good Christian library.
we take so much for granted in America.
Let us look back, so we won't get lazy.

Did not impress me.

Not biblical about the apostles story. I can't really rely on this as truth. Its can be seen as the source of many unbiblical tales of the apostles deaths. Everything else should be take with a grain of salt.

Simply Amazing!

Gave background and depth as to why Protestantism took hold in England. Stories are easy to follow and the attention to detail is such that I feel I know the subjects even after almost 500 years have past. Great book! Glad to see it here on Audible!

Abridged version

The editor claims that nothing has been omitted, except that this audiobook is less than 12 hours, and, to read the actual, original text takes 60+ hours, which another has done. It is also admitted that Foxe’s original sermons and teaching on church history is left out.

That leaves the listener with a ton of lost context. It also makes this edition a recitation of history. The war between the Church of Rome and the Reformation is an essential underpinning for this work. Bloody Mary was called so because she viscously adhered to Catholicism. King Edward the VI had intentionally left his crown to the Protestant Lady Jane Gray, to avoid the horrifying reign of his older sister Mary. Elizabeth the First was successful because she allowed truth, and some religious freedom.

John Wycliffe, John Hus, John Bunyan, John Knox, John Calvin (John has been a popular first name, and extremely common…) all battled for the truth and the freedom of faith. But by omitting the history of monarchs and persecution and political nuisances, it’s nothing more than a long, miserable list of victims. This is not good, because this was written as a memorial for martyrs.

Don't buy from Audible they suck.

Don't buy from Audible they suck you can't get it out in mp3 format files. Used hours to try to figure out how to get into mp3 only to find out it seemed impossible with there new bullshit security things - that I can't do what I want - and have pretty much only bought a license of a product not being able to do what I want with it as I want. You can get this version of Foxes book of Martyr from another place in MP3 format as I mistakenly ended up getting it from 2 places - one being audible who don't even let me take it out of the platform for easy playing on other sources because of there security nonsense. I won't have anything to do with a company like this - and I don't want it on my phone. And 30 days free on Audible and then you need to pay YET you still have to pay for books? What a Scam!!!
