All's fair in love and chairmanships

Ben Bova Flight of Exiles is the second installment in his Exiles trilogy. The giant space station turn interstellar generation ship is nearing its destination. Limping along, a fire causes the death of multiple sleepers. In the midst of these issues a new chairman is scheduled to take over as they can begin to assess possible colony worlds. What ensues is a duel between the two contenders for both the chairmanship as well as the hand of a young woman. Staying will require genetically engineering the next generation to survive on the only barely habitable world, while moving on to another star will require much needed repairs and a lot of luck. When accidents begin to occur something or someone much more sinister seems afoot and the woman gambles to flush out the genocidal maniac.

Bova blends a number of classic themes of small group dynamics including diametrically opposed vision of the future as well as societal pressure colliding with a heart’s passion. At the same time, he crafts a planet different enough from Earth (much heavier gravity, sulfurous atmosphere, etc.) as to require some genetic tweaking for human adaptation, although this aspect is downplayed relative to the first book.

The narration is excellent with solid character distinction. Pacing is brisk making for fast listen.

No Sci...

These books is ofcourse old (1970ish), however other scifi books from before this time usually have some "science in their fiction " . with just listen to the first 2 books has some insane improvement , but putting first 2000 ppl on a space station which have no computers? (1st book), not to mention that genetic can change humanity , but no examples of the scientist can make any changes (except a talking gorilla....)

Imo it is anti sci fi. And main plot is in both books love triangles and jealousy and stupid decisions...

Entertaining but thin plot

This one is not a high brow philosophical work, nor does it have any great insights into human nature or any new sci-fi devices, but its written well enough so you can sort of feel like your part of the story and it doesn’t take much effort to listen to. So if you want light entertainment this is a good book.

I'm sorry, this is the least of the books

For a short story I felt there was way too much melodrama and not enough basic action

Instead of 3 Novellas, Why Not One Major Novel?

Since the plots of the Exile novellas span multi-generational decades, all with the same singular focus & inter-related characters, I would have much preferred one longer novel instead of three shorter, separate novellas. This could be Space Opera with a much grander sweep! Just as we begin to understand the main characters in each of the episodes, the story ends and we are back to a repeat exposition of who the Exiles are, and what they hope for. The writing could be tighter, the characterizations deeper, and with Stefan Rudnicki narrating, this would be one superb SF adventure!

This reader is great

I enjoyed this story. Has that old sci fi feel to it. The reader has an outstanding voice for this genre. And the price was right. 😉

Not a Sci Fi master

An okay story filled with tropes. The author was definitely a product of his time. There are multiple dated and cringe worthy moments. The author obviously thought plastic was the way of the future as his favorite adjective seems to be "plastic". Don't bother if you're looking for a great scientific mind.

The story continues

This is the second book in a 3 part series. I enjoyed the first part better, but this is an excellent addition to the story.I will be starting the third part soon.

19th century melodrama.

1 hour and 37 minutes to finish the book and I quit. The characters are unrealistic Tarzan and Jane.

I suffered this through book one, but it has become so oppressive that I want them all to die in space and burn up entering the atmosphere. The story concept is great. Instantly and totally evil opponents, manly and chauvinistic heroes and bubble headed ditzy blondes, ruin the effort.

I am deleting book 2 unfinished and book 3 unstarted.

Hasn’t aged well unfortunately

I stumbled across an article of many authors who had passed due to covid, and instantly noticed Ben Bova. As a teenager, I devoured books. They were little glimpses of wonderful or terrible things that the future will hold. Ben Bova was a favourite, and in the mid 90’s I had a fair collection of his works. I remembered the “Exiles” trilogy being especially interesting, as it spanned a story of three distinct parts over many centuries. Unfortunately, revisiting these 25-30 years later has shown me how dated the views of the characters in the books have become and they are painful to read/listen to now. The core story is still interesting but sadly, I no longer consider it something I would recommend.
