Sintesi dell'editore
It seems that a low-rent Don Juan has been busily seducing the local womenfolk, and, in a town this small, no secret is kept for long. When the Fletchers' picnic is interrupted by the discovery of a broken body at the foot of the cliff, that of the philandering local innkeeper, the unflappable Daisy Dalrymple finds herself embroiled in a mystery.
In the continuation of her popular series, Carola Dunn vividly evokes the life and times of 1920s England, wrapped in a classic mystery to delight her many fans.
"A lively historical cozy." (Library Journal)
"Replete with well-drawn characters, snappy dialogue, and interesting plot twists...a charming series." (Booklist)

a stronger entry in the series, eventually
This starts off sounding like a YA mystery but by hour two becomes a well-plotted cozy with some good setting detail. Narrator Dunne just sounds too American, however, for a Brit cozy, and the jazz age tone she attempts is even less suitable in this installment because there's less humour and flippancy to Daisy, more attempted sleuthing. I've found the titles available to date on Audible of vaying quality but still hope that Audible adds more Dunne titles. Daisy and Alec seem to be developing into a more interesting detective team.

Wonderful narrator
Where does Fall of a Philanderer rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?
About fourth or fifth (I liked the other Daisy Dalrymple books better.)
Who was your favorite character and why?
Daisy, of course.
Which scene was your favorite?
Any scene with Alec and Daisy
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I adore this series. I laugh all the way through it. I only wish you had more of the series on Audible.
Any additional comments?
The narrator is marvelous. I could listen to her all day.

Different narrator, but she was "ok"
The narrator was different for this installment of the series. She took a little getting used to, but all in all she didn't detract from the story.
The only thing that annoyed me in terms of accuracy is that Daisy kept saying she was "pregnant. " That word wasn't used openly at that time, particularly in mixed company . Daisy would be described as "with child" and that would be in the seclusion of her family, not practical strangers at a boarding house.
Beyond that, the story was good. Let's move on to the next.

Wonderful - More audio books of Daisy needed!
Where does Fall of a Philanderer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the better 'cozy mysteries' available on audio. The story is good, the plot interesting and the characters compelling. I have enjoyed all of Daisy's stories on Audible and am so disappointed that this is the final one available in the audio version.
Please feature the rest of the Daisy series on Audible!
What other book might you compare Fall of a Philanderer to and why?
Similar to others in the series, in addition to the Rhys Bowen books.
What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?
Ms. Dunne's narration is rich and interesting. She brings emotion to all of the characters. A few times, she does sound a little too American.

I do hope that more books are coming!
I do love the Daisy Dalrumple (now Fletcher) books. The "innocent" crime along with the underlying love-story, not to mention the charming lingo is enchanting!

Narration spoiled it for me
I have listened all the previous books in this series but I just couldn't bear this narrator. I stuck it out for a few chapters but just gave up. I will download a kindle version for reading as I am sure I will enjoy the story.

5 stars
This is another well written mystery in a highly enjoyable cozy mystery series. I prefer the narration of Lucy Rayner, but, Bernadette Dunne's narration didn't keep me from enjoying the book. I look forward to the next book.

Loved this one
As with the previous Daisy Dalrymple/Fletcher stories, this is a charming and engaging story, with a good plot, interesting characters, and an unexpected twist. I particularly appreciate the narration skills of Bernadette Dunne. I wish all books in the series could be performed by either Ms. Dunne or, even better, Mia Chiaromonte. I do not care for Lucy Raynor's interpretation of some of the recurring characters.

Snoozer!
What would have made Fall of a Philanderer better?
a more interesting story
What do you think your next listen will be?
a different British mystery
What aspect of Bernadette Dunne’s performance would you have changed?
Her voice has a monotone quality that didn't help to liven up the dull story.
What character would you cut from Fall of a Philanderer?
all of them
Any additional comments?
Skip this one!

Narration a bit off
This is an engaging, undemanding story that evokes English seaside holidays nicely. It was my first Daisy Dalrymple mystery, and I'll certainly try another. However, my enjoyment of this one was diminished by the off-putting narration. The attempted English accent is poor, and the characters' voices are barely distinguishable from each other. The diction, pace and sound quality are fine. I don't usually notice the narrator's voice once I've got into a story, but this one grated on me throughout.

awful narrator
Good story spoilt by awful narration. I'm sure she could have researched the terms used such as coxswain and Rowlands.

Another reader with no grasp of English accents
The first books in this series were read by the worse narrator I’ve ever heard; strangulated vowels and bizarre pronunciation abounded. Then, the next few had a good reader who made a decent job of the accents. Now we have another horror. Cawfee, awffice for coffee and office, for example. Stresses on the wrong parts of words and total mangling of British English across the classes. At times she veered from American/Canadian to Australian. Not quite as dire as the first narrator, but very poor. It’s a shame, as I really like the stories. I listen despite the awful accents.

Disappointing
American narration sits oddly with this story about the English upper class Daisy Dalrymple. There is little character development, and the plot is disappointing.

Dreadful reading
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I really love my audio books and how they are read is as important as the story. Choosing the right reader, either one who has the right voice or has the acting skill to get it right, is as important as someone who gets the right mood for the story, gets the emphasis and sentence breaks where the author put them. In this case it is simply that the main character and about half the cast are obviously of a particular class and to be so far off what is naturally expected, produces a jarring effect that is distinctly unpleasant.
What didn’t you like about Bernadette Dunne’s performance?
Her accent. Daisy Dalrymple maybe married to a policeman, but she is an Honourable. She is of the between wars aristocracy and this reader makes no attempt to get it right.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
frustration and disappointment.

Story not bad - pity about the reader
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Not really - there are better detective writers
What other book might you compare Fall of a Philanderer to, and why?
The Victorian murder mysteries by Emily Brightwell. They are lightweight stories.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Bernadette Dunne?
Not unless she was reading an American book.
Did Fall of a Philanderer inspire you to do anything?
No
Any additional comments?
The narration, as previous reviews have said, is really not up to scratch. This is obviously an American trying to 'do' an English accent. For instance she will insist on doing a long 'a' in the belief that that will make for an English, rather than American pronunciation. It was very irritating and really spoiled what might have been a jolly little story.

Spoilt
Ghaaaaaaasstly narration with grating mis pronunciation, wandering character voices and accents. Surprised that second narrator used for Ms Dunn’s books is only slightly better than the one in earlier books; difficult to get worse ! Such a shame

Return of hilarious pronounciation
Hoping the next narrator is better. It really distracts and lets the story down. However these are such easy gentle stories and just what’s required at the moment. Thanks
