Sintesi dell'editore

Retirement planning was simple and predictable 40 years ago. All you needed was your company pension, personal savings, and Social Security.

Those days are long gone. Most public pensions are underfunded, and private companies can't get rid of them fast enough. Social Security's own trustees predict it will run out of money in less than 20 years. And most people haven't saved even a fraction of what they should.

Retiring comfortably today is not about saving more, it's about saving smart. In Don't Retire Broke, you will learn the following:

  • Traps to avoid before you retire
  • How to maximize Social Security benefits
  • What to do now if you still have a pension
  • How to keep the IRS out of your IRA

Isn't it time to make sure you don't retire broke?

find a different personal finance, retirement book

Some of this information I disagree with and find to be incorrect and would lead someone to make the wrong retirement investing moves. I would never recommend this book, but certainly not all the information is wrong. However, there is enough erroneous information on such an important subject that I don't believe anyone should rely upon this book.

Decent - Worth the Read

Sometimes I struggle to want to finish. Quite complicated to understand. this definitely didn't make me an expert. But I did get a lot of good information out of the book. Worth the read

Good - but outdated

Good book with a solid overview of financial retirement topics to discuss with an advisor/planner. Unfortunately, times have changed, and some of the advice is outdated. Even a book written today, will likely need to be updated next year, as a number of changes are happening that would alter today's advice. Look for an updated version of this book or a similar (more current) book.

Financial advice ruined by anti-government screeds

While the book title makes it sound like it's geared toward the average person who needs to save money for retirement, it's really geared toward people who have no problem saving money for retirement, but rather want to legally minimize their taxes once they're retired and when they pass on any money they've saved to relatives when they die. This is interesting but not what I was looking for.

Also, the experience of listening is ruined by the unnecessary editorializing about the evil government "stealing" rich people's money. I'm sorry, but if you put money in tax deferred accounts and then get angry about paying taxes on them later (which is what deferment is--deferment does not mean never paying taxes), you're an idiot. I have to roll my eyes at people who expect to live in this country and reap all the benefits of living in it but not have to pay their fair share of taxes.

Reading the book would be better because the audio format makes it difficult to skip the anti-government rants.

Great retirement info

A bit repetitive, but that could be a good thing if you have memory issues.

Comprehensive

This is the first book on how to manage retirement that I’ve read, and there have been many, that offered a completely comprehensive account on how to and when to handle the business of retaining as much of your hard earned money as legally possible!
