'I often arrive at quite sensible ideas and judgements, on the spur of the moment. It is when I stop to think that I become foolish.'

First published in 1891, Diary of a Pilgrimage is a charming retelling of a journey to Oberammergau, Germany: the home of the famous Passion Play.

Written with Jerome's trademark wit and candour, Diary of a Pilgrimage follows our protagonist – who appears to act as a proxy for Jerome himself – and his friend, B., as they travel to Germany to see the eminent Passion Play, a traditional historical spectacle that occurs once every ten years. Covering lengthy train journeys, rough boat rides (including an unfortunate bout of seasickness), and humorous encounters with locals across England, France and Germany, Jerome's protagonist is constantly divided between his anxieties around the trip as well as his thirst for adventure. With amusing meditations on the nature of travel and being out of one's comfort zone, Diary of a Pilgrimage is a lively, vibrant and hugely funny novel that showcases Jerome at his very best.

Jerome K. Jerome (1859 – 1927) was an English author and actor. Renowned for his comic works, he is best known for the hilarious travelogue, Three Men in a Boat. A prolific writer and admirer of the theatre, he penned several novels, essays and plays throughout his life.
