Sintesi dell'editore

"Nothing good ever happens at the butt-crack of dawn. No doubt, the headless corpse on the autopsy table in front of me would agree." – Violet Parker

Real estate agent Violet "Spooky" Parker stumbles upon a body-part theft ring at the local funeral parlor and suspects her caustic coworker has a hand in it - or maybe a foot. Can Violet discover what's in the crates that the crooks are sneaking out of the mortuary in the dark of night? Or will she end up in one of them herself - in pieces?

Gets Better and Better

What I like most about this book is the realistic dialogue. I know most people are offended by cursing, but the words aren't used gratuitously and it only adds spice and realism. This isn't the typical cozy mystery. There is paranormal activity and lots of sex. But, I love it anyway. I can't wait to read the next one.

Fun story, annoying heroine

The writing in this series seems to get better with each book, but the heroine just seems like a dingbat sometimes. I keep holding on because I like the other characters and I want to see where the story is going, but the heroine's slowness to catch on gets pretty annoying. I guess I'm hoping the author writes her a little smarter as the writing improves in general. I may opt for the print books so I can just skate over the parts where she acts/ things like a bimbo.

Paranormal incognito

I never would have bought this book (Kindle-Audible combo) had I known the mystery involved ghosts and who-knows-what-other paranormal plot elements. I stopped reading after the first ghost appears. As a matter of faith I actively avoid such stories.
I appreciate that most books are upfront about what they are in the description or series title. This book gave no clue. I'm conflicted about assigning a star rating. I've always thought it unfair when someone reviews a book negatively when the book is in a genre outside their interest. Like a romance reader faulting a work of historical fiction for having "long boring sections of facts"! Since this is outside my genres of interest, I don't think it fair to give this book a low rating. So I will go neutral with 3s. I'm writing this review for the benefit of others like me who steer clear of paranormal.

Still a good read, but...

I still enjoy the story and I still laugh and I still love Doc. But... honestly Violet doesn’t have any redeeming qualities to me. She’s a horrible friend, she’s not that great a mother and since the beginning I’ve only ever seen her using the people around her and never giving back. If she was a single woman this would be a lot more enjoyable because then her behavior would make more sense. But she’s not, she has two kids and she’s running around like she doesn’t. It drives me crazy. When I see this as her as a single woman without motherly responsibilities I enjoy the story. It’s cute and funny despite the fact that she’s a horrible best friend. I will keep reading and hopefully she’ll start to mature. We shall see. The narrator is excellent though. She is a huge reason I keep listening!

A great storyline, but Violet is a nutcase

I really wanted to like this series, because the plot line is original, most characters are deep and quirky, there's a lot of humor, and I want to see what happens next in Deadwood. But so far, the heroine, Violet, needs a vacation and a lot of therapy. The pressure she puts on herself, hiding what's going on from friends and family selectively and keeping track of who she has told what, is enough to make a sane woman crack. Then add the near-death moments, fires, and work stress on top is just unbearable, and it shows big-time. I expected her to crack in this book.

Her complete a-hole of a coworker, Ray, should have been fired for sexual and general harassments in the first book; I REALLY don't like his comments and threats that continue forever, and I was hoping that he would die in this book. Violet just doesn't seem able to win anywhere--not at work, not with her relationship with Doc and Natalie, not with her kids who she barely spends time with, not her mother. Please, let her win against Ray at least!

I don't understand why a single mom with twins and 30 years of experience sounds like an angsty teenager. From the beginning, she takes stupid risks without thinking of the consequences, even though she has a lot of people counting on her including her twins. The talk she gave to her children after they had fought was so old-school; she didn't give her son any advice on how to handle his emotions when he gets mad and lets her daughter's preoccupation with winning a father continue unchecked. That's typical behavior for a 4 or 5 year old, but these two are 10 and should know by now not to flap their lips about private family matters. Of course, they reflect their mother's own emotional immaturity.

I don't know if I will read any more, because I ended up fast-forwarding over Violet's monologues and get angry when she misses the most obvious clues (hello? drunken night with a coworker had to be explained in small words to her.)

OMG, I love it!

So far this series has been incredible! I find myself reacting exactly in my head like she does. Can’t wait to start the next one will be heartbroken when it is over.

Well- Stephanie Plum Goes West

These are quirky stories with a seni-likeable main character who gets herself into stupid situations and has a cast of friends and enemies that are worth the listen. Doc could do better. But the sex scenes are cringeworthy. Oi. I fast forward through those. I like the paranormal elements. On to book 4.

Another outstanding one.

I am so hooked on these series books. They keep you guessing and make you laugh as well. Can't put this book down. A must read for sure.
