Stephen Marlowe
Sam soon discovers that Henry is hardly unique. Children across the city have become astonishingly intelligent, adults calmly accept their authority, and familiar customs are disappearing almost overnight. Even Sam’s desire for a few strips of bacon makes people look at him as though something is seriously wrong. A radio broadcast finally offers an explanation, but instead of reassuring Sam, it leaves him wondering whether he is the only sane person left.
Seeking help, Sam visits psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Thorne. There he meets seven-year-old Betty, the doctor’s granddaughter, who appears far better qualified to examine him than her grandfather. Her questions lead Sam toward an explanation more disturbing than anything he imagined. In this wonderfully unsettling science fiction story, Stephen Marlowe turns an ordinary morning into a nightmare where almost everyone accepts the impossible—and the one man who objects may be the real problem.
Stephen Marlowe was born Milton Lesser in Brooklyn in 1928. His early science fiction appeared extensively in magazines including Amazing Stories, and his first published SF story was “All Heroes Are Hated!” in the November 1950 issue of Amazing. He also wrote under names including C. H. Thames and Adam Chase, producing science fiction novels such as Earthbound, The Star Seekers, and Stadium Beyond the Stars.
“Crack of Doom” appeared in the April 1953 issue of Avon Science Fiction and Fantasy Reader. Marlowe later became particularly successful in crime fiction, creating private detective Chester Drum in The Second Longest Night in 1955.
