Surviving Life’s Most Brutal Storms
As a World Series-winning pitcher with the San Francisco Giants, Jeremy Affeldt stared down all kinds of pressure. But none compared to the stress he faced in his personal life, when things completely fell apart. He learned that going it alone in a crisis is like trying to pitch without a catcher—there’s no one to help with the next pitch or advise you on the curveballs.
In Built for the Storm, Affeldt shares his personal story—including pitching with double vision in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series—and the lesson he’s learned: It’s better to find your herd—a small group of friends who are there for you when
the next storm hits. It’s called the “buffalo mentality”—a mindset to run toward the storm, rather than away from it. Not because the storm isn’t terrifying, but because it is. And when we face the storm and move into it, there’s a good chance we’ll get through it faster. Especially together. That’s the buffalo mentality. That’s built for the storm.
