Sintesi dell'editore
The murder of a small-time drug dealer snowballs into the most complex case ever faced by Joe Gunther and his VBI team.
It is said a bright and clear bomber’s moon is the best asset to finding one’s target. But beware what you wish for: what you can see at night can also see you, often with dire consequences.
Two young women form the heart of this tale. One is an investigative reporter, the other a private investigator. Uneasy allies from completely different walks of life, they work together - around and sometimes against Joe Gunther and his VBI cops - in an attempt to connect the murders of a small-town drug dealer; a smart, engaging, fatally flawed thief; and the tangled, political, increasingly dark goings on at a prestigious prep school.
While Gunther and the VBI set about solving the two murders, Sally Kravitz and Rachel Reiling combine their talents and resources to go where the police cannot, from working undercover at Thorndike Academy, to having clandestine meetings with criminals for their insider’s knowledge of Vermont’s unexpectedly illicit underbelly.
But there is a third element at work. A malevolent force, the common link in all this death and chaos, is hard at work sowing mayhem to protect its ancient, vicious, very dark roots.

Over developed character list for plot.
While always great to visit with Joe, Sam, Willie, Lester and the crew, this book is over laden with unnecessary, and often confusing, micro over development of its core characters for the mediocre plot. It's ending seems to indicate that Archer, too, tired of this story.

Great story and wonderful narration! AS ALWAYS!
I loved getting to see the dynamic of Rachel and Sally working together and becoming friends. And all the “troopers” on Joe’s team delivered as they usually do. Glad Willie is becoming more secure.

Too much Rachel
Come on. You’ve got a brand new reporter who makes deals with the police, offed previews of stories to her sources, makes the news instead of reporting the news, and crosses more lines than there are on the face of Joe’s “ancient mother.” It’s outrageous behavior. In real life, her behavior would be getting cases thrown out of court. She doesn’t know the law and she doesn’t know what compromises evidence because she has NO Experience. It seems like Archer is setting her and Lucy up to be the dynamic duo that will spawn a new series. The problem is I just don’t like the character as much I like Joe and the team.

Great great
Again I love these novels. I hate that I’m almost done with them. I didn’t like the end of this one. Ended too abruptly

Ond of the best
I’ve been reading the whole series - as I’ve done with quite a few detective novels series these last years. Most series are shorter. But almost always I’ve had to take one or more breaks, since it’s hard to avoid mellowing out. It’s a challenge to make every novel to stand out, have its own personality. A few books ago I started to worry that was about to happen to Joe Gunther. But I was wrong. This book is as good as the first.
So happy with the mindset. The underlying views. The way personality’s are growing. And the plots.
For a person living in an European country that has many things common with Vermont (including climate and mud season) this is so lovely. Real comfort books but without to much sugar and romance.
And of course - a reader that never disappoints.
Thanks!
I have just a few books left. So I hope the sabbatical I heard of stays a sabbatical. I want more Gunther in my life.

Good book but incomplete ending!
Another good book by Archer Mayor that stops short of winding up the ending. There should have been another chapter instead of an abrupt ending. Tom Taylirson is great!

Great story
I really enjoy these Joe Gunther books, I like the threads that run through them even though each book is a stand alone story. His gentle manner is so different from most other cop books

Incomplete
Apart from being an all-round disappoint, the book is incomplete. This is either an attempt to make readers buy a similarly aimless sequel or the author couldn't work out how to finish it and just gave up. I do wish writers would take the trouble to map out the plot before they started. Why it was published in this state presents more of a mystery than anything in the book.
