Sintesi dell'editore

Johnny Cash was a poor sharecropper's son from Arkansas who became one of the most influential figures in American music. In the 1950s he embarked on a music career that took him to the heights of fame and wealth but also to the depths of addiction and despair. From these tensions Johnny Cash created haunting music, exploring the dark side of himself, and others, in a voice that sometimes sounded as old as the Grand Canyon. The Man Called Cash chronicles his career, his love for June Carter Cash, his struggles, and his triumphs. Johnny Cash put his soul into his music, drawing on his demons, his faith, his pain, and his joy to become, to many, the voice of truth.

"An affecting mosaic of oral history, poetry, and memoir concerning Cash himself, but also the era in which his music took root and thrived." (Publishers Weekly)
"In what may be the most admirable of its many achievements, it's as good as Cash deserves." (Rolling Stone)

His final years following his relapse

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Needed more inflection in his voice, seemed very mechanical

Whether you are a fan of Johnny Cash or of country music in general you will thoroughly enjoy this well read, easy to listen to biography. If you are not a Johnny Cash fan I think the chances are pretty good that you will become one after listening to this biography.

A Mann Called Cash

Oddly to me, the book started slowly, covering Cash's early years, and the work he did before going into his recording career. These were the years I was interested in hearing about when I bought the recording, so I felt some initial disappointment. But once past his divorce from his first wife, the story and the writing really take off, and the promises of the book's cover notes are kept. This is a compelling tale of a mythological figure and it has the right mix legend and fact, forcefully told.

Gut-wrenching and Glorious

Johnny Cash's story is a roller coaster ride throughout. The dark periods are tragic and lonely, but the redemption story makes it all the more thrilling to read. As the epilogue says, "If it wasn't for June (Carter Cash), we might well be saying Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Cash all in the same sentence." Thanks to June, and especially Jesus Christ, Johnny Cash, while very far from perfect, is a wonderful story of amazing grace. Whatever you are currently reading, put it away for awhile, and read this book!

Great read

I enjoyed learning about the man I have admired. Spiritually, and humanly unique, I truly wish there were more people like Cash, especially in today's commercial world.

For lovers of the Man in Black

I am a fan of Johnny Cash and already knew some of his history. However, it was nice to listen to this biography which seemed to be well documented and quite truthful. The only downside for me was that when there was excerpts from songs they were read and not played. It probably is a problem of copyrights but it would definitely make it more enjoyable although the narration was very good.

Excellent Biography of 'The Man in Black'

This is an absorbing biography of one of country music's most influential and enigmatic stars. The life of Johnny Cash is one of great interest, particularly when he is battling his inner demons, addictions, family crises, and deteriorating health. The book starts near the end of his life when Johnny loses the love of his life, his wife June Carter Cash. His determination to carry on with his music to help combat his despair illustrates the kind of man he was. The book then goes back to his roots and we are taken forward through his life and career. Cash's musical revival towards the end of his life under Steve Rubin is also covered, including an excellent and vivid description of the video that accompanied one of his last singles('Hurt'). I highly recommend this book.
