Valentin Chmerkovskiy, the world championship-winning and beloved Dancing with the Stars ballroom dancer invites fans into his life as never before, sharing the experiences, including the failures and successes, that have shaped him, from his early childhood in Ukraine to growing up as an immigrant in the US to his rise to international fame.
Val has captivated viewers of Dancing with the Stars since his first performance in 2011. While DWTS demonstrates Val's beautiful physicality, this moving memoir illuminates his soul, revealing a deep, thoughtful person who channels his emotions and socially conscious views through his art. The beloved dance champion and choreographer assesses his life and career so far - where he's come from and where he hopes to go.
For the first time, Val looks back at his childhood in Odessa, Ukraine, and his Jewish family's immigration to the United States - including what it was like to grow up as a stranger desperate to fit into a different culture, how he worked to become a premiere dancer, and, of course, the collaborations and competitions with his brother and fellow DWTS sensation, Maksim "Maks" Chmerkovskiy.
Val speaks warmly of his close-knit family and shares intimate and inspiring stories meant to offer hope and motivation not only to fans but to everyone with a dream. Enduring anti-Semitism in their native land, Val's parents wanted a better life for their children - a desire that led them to leave everything they knew and start again thousands of miles away in a foreign country. It was a gamble that paid off - after years of practice and discipline, Val, along with his older brother Maks, have reached the pinnacle of success. Though he admits he sometimes still feels like an outsider, Val expresses his enduring gratitude for everything that America represents and pays homage to his adopted nation and the opportunities it has afforded him and his family.
Inspiring, heartfelt, and compulsively listenable - and including a foreword written by brother Maks - Val's memoir is filled with the moments that have moved and shaped him, and is sure to touch listeners' hearts as well.

I’m a fan of Dancing with the Stars. I find Maks arrogant but have always liked Val and was interested in the story. It’s well written but the fact he narrated it made all the difference. He does a great job. He is funny, serious and talented. The book gives a huge insight into how they got where they are and into who they are. The audible version of the book is well worth a listen.
Amazing book, love Val, his spirit, his family, his drive, his passion, his talent, his heart ♡
Wow, just wow!! I've been a fan of the Chmerkovskiy brothers for a couple years now, so I've known most of the main things about their story. But to actually hear the details.... I cried like a baby in chapter 16 at the part about Maks getting the chance to partner with Joanna Leunis. I'm so incredibly happy that all their work and sacrifice paid off. More than anything it was so moving to see family really coming through for each other and their rock solid love and loyalty. I've always defended them when people call them cocky or arrogant, especially Maks, but now I'm ready to physically fight someone who dare insult them in front of me!
Great book! I didn’t realize what an amazing book writer Val is. Definitely worth listening!!!
Very well written and narrated; took me on so many journeys and emotions. Thank you, Chmerkovskiy family!
I am a huge fan of the Chmerkovskiy brothers , together and individually. I knew little snippets of their incredible family story, but to hear it all from Vals perspective was so heartfelt. The hard work, love and sacrifices made by this family is remarkable. I have always noticed on the show that Val, more than any other pro, always makes sure to give appreciation and thanks to the behind the scenes people that put it all together. I loved his book. I hope wherever his career leads him, he continues to inspire others as much as he has inspired his dance partners and those around him.
I have watched DWTS from the beginning, so I knew some of Val's story, but it was good to hear all about his family and struggles. Personally, after listening to this book, I think his entire family is inspiring.
Any additional comments?
I have loved watching the Chmerkovskiy brothers on Dancing with the Stars, and I saw them perform their story when they came to Boston. Who knew that Val is also an excellent writer and story teller? I enjoyed every minute of it, and I hope he'll continue to write!
A truly inspiring read!! As an avid DWTS fan, it was wonderful to get to know, on a very personal level, Valentin Chmerkovskiy!!!
