How does a car dealership actually work?
In the first installment of Behind the Deal, Brian Kelledy takes Jim Bratton inside the automotive retail business. Brian describes a dealership as five different businesses operating together: new cars, used cars, finance and insurance, service, and parts/body operations.
They talk about why those departments have to work together, why inventory has to turn, how financing and paperwork fit into the transaction, and why customer relationships and repeat business matter.
The conversation then moves into the forces that shape the industry: manufacturers, interest rates, EV charging infrastructure, the pandemic inventory shortage, incomplete vehicles waiting for parts, pre-orders, used-car competition, and the rise of large dealer groups.
Most importantly, this is only the beginning. Brian and Jim discover that the automotive business is big enough that almost every topic they touch could become an episode of its own.
Welcome to Behind the Deal—a series within The Jim Bratton Podcast that goes inside the business behind the car you buy.
