John Arroyo’s Army story began with a failed ASVAB—that is, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery— a difficult childhood, and a self-held belief that he was not destined for much success. He would go on to serve as a Special Forces soldier, deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq, before being commissioned in the Army’s Medical Service Corps.
Then, on April 2, 2014, only months into his first assignment as an Army officer at Fort Hood, Arroyo was shot through the neck by another Soldier during an attack that left four others dead.
Today, through A Life Transformed, Arroyo works to help service members, families, students, and leaders better understand identity, fatherhood, trauma, spiritual readiness, and purpose.
In this episode of Army Matters, LTG (Ret.) Leslie Smith and SMA (Ret.) Dan Dailey sit down with Arroyo to talk about identity, family, resilience, faith—and what happens when unseen wounds carried in military service remain unresolved.
His message is simple: There is nothing in your life so broken that it cannot be restored.
