In the middle of the 20th century, a man named George Orwell wrote a book entitled 1984. It was one of the first of the truly dystopian stories to describe the direction of humanity under a totalitarian dictatorship. One of the fascinating features of Orwell's vision of the future was the manipulation of language. Because with the changing of definitions, with the newly assigned meanings so that words mean something different than they've traditionally meant, he shows how government is able to reshape the way we think about things. Language is thevehicle for critical thinking. And so, if we change the language, we shape the thought process. We've seen that now for generations. Orwell was ahead of his time because we now no longer talk about being pro-abortion, we’re pro-choice. Whilewe say we're pro-life, the other side likes to call us anti-abortion. The language that we use shapes or provides the framework for the way we think about things. Well, there's a new example that I want you to hear about. Let's talk about manipulating language for ideology.
