What happens when the people who commit a crime have time to turn their lives around, while the victims are left struggling to rebuild theirs?
In June 2023, in Sunderland, Norman Cooke and his friend Carla Nossini were walking home after celebrating the life of a friend they’d lost. What began with an apparently harmless passing comment turned into a brutal assault that left 67-year-old Norman with a brain bleed and in hospital for two weeks. The attack had a lasting impact on both Norman and Carla, affecting their physical health, wellbeing and everyday lives.
But the attack was only part of the story.
Despite two young offenders pleading guilty, it took around three years for the case to reach its conclusion. When it did, it left us asking some difficult questions about the delay in sentencing, the offenders’ circumstances, and what justice really means for the people left living with the consequences.
We discuss the impact of the delay, the difficult balance between accountability and rehabilitation, and whether the criminal justice system is doing enough to put victims first.
As former Crime Scene Investigators, we’ve seen the aftermath of crime up close, but this case raises questions that go far beyond the initial investigation. What does justice look like when you’ve waited years for an outcome? And what happens when the wait itself becomes part of the story?
We also reflect on our own experiences of the criminal justice system, and why victims deserve to be heard, supported and not forgotten.
Content note: This episode discusses violence and the long-term psychological impact on victims, including references to suicide attempts.
