Main Text: Matthew 25:24–30 (ESV) 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Preaching Point: We must examine whether our lives demonstrate genuine faith in Christ, knowing that a life of persistent unfaithfulness reveals a soul destined for God’s judgment.
Teaching Points:
- Don’t Excuse Your Unfaithfulness (vv. 24-25)
- Recognize That God Sees Through Your Excuses (vv. 26-27)
- Fear the Judgment of an Unfaithful Life (vv. 28-30)
Application Questions:
- Read Matthew 25:24–30. Write down one observation or application you found helpful from this week’s sermon. Why did it stand out to you?
- What excuses did the unfaithful servant make for his lack of stewardship in Matthew 25:24–25?
- What excuses are you prone to making for your own unfaithfulness or inaction? What specific steps can you take to begin obeying God and stop making excuses?
- Read Luke 16:10–12. How should Jesus’ teaching about faithfulness in small things influence the way you steward what God has entrusted to you?
- Read Luke 16:14–15 and Proverbs 16:2. What do these passages teach about our tendency to justify ourselves and God's ability to discern the true motives of our hearts?
- How should these truths challenge you to examine your excuses and honestly evaluate the motives behind them?
- Read Matthew 25:28–30 and Matthew 7:21–23. If Christ returned today, would your stewardship of what God has entrusted to you provide evidence of genuine saving faith or reveal a lack of genuine trust in him? Explain your answer.
- Read 2 Corinthians 13:5–6 and Hebrews 3:12–14. Why is it important for professing Christians (as well as unbelievers) to examine their faith, and how can you lovingly encourage others to do the same?
