Ariel Dorfman's DEATH AND THE MAIDEN had its world-premiere at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs on July 4th,1991, and was moved to the main stage Royal Court October 31st, 1991.
Based on Dorfman's experiences as a Chilean in the 1970s, when a dramatic coup ended Allende's presidency and ushered in the extreme and Fascistic Pinochet regime, during which thousands of his countrymen were tortured and killed.
Dorfman wrote his most famous play while in exile, and it immediately resonated with audiences, who sensed its
truth and universality. Many well-known actors have tackled the triad of complex roles, including Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley, who starred in Roman Polanski's film version.
