Jimmy Burke was never formally inducted into the American Mafia, largely because of his Irish ancestry, yet he became one of the most influential criminal associates connected to New York’s Lucchese crime family. Known as “Jimmy the Gent,” Burke built a reputation for planning robberies, cultivating relationships with powerful gangsters, and allegedly using murder to eliminate threats to his criminal enterprises. We trace his rise through New York’s underworld, his relationship with Henry Hill, his suspected role in the Lufthansa heist, and the criminal convictions that ultimately sent him to prison. His life, later dramatized through Robert De Niro’s portrayal of Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas, offers a disturbing look at the difference between Hollywood’s romanticized gangsters and the violence of actual organized crime.
