James “Jimmy the Gent” Burke was a powerful organized crime associate whose name became inseparable from the infamous 1978 Lufthansa robbery. Although he was never convicted of the heist itself, Burke eventually received lengthy prison sentences for crimes including murder and involvement in a college basketball point-shaving scheme. We examine his convictions, imprisonment, criminal reputation, and the circumstances surrounding his death in federal custody in 1996. His story raises a compelling question about what happens when a criminal accustomed to exercising power through intimidation loses his freedom and enters the prison system.
