The Forty‑eighth Massachusetts Pressed Past the Junction - Did They Make It?
In this episode, we follow a Union division’s march from Baton Rouge toward the Plains Store crossroads and the sequence of tactical choices that turned a routine advance into a dangerous gamble. What happened when the Forty-eighth Massachusetts pushed beyond the junction, isolated from its main force, and why did those decisions matter?
Person: Major General Christopher C. Augur
Person: Colonel William R. Miles
Location: Plains Store crossroads, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana
Date: May 21, 1863
Unit: Forty-eighth Massachusetts
- Augur led roughly 3,500 men north from Baton Rouge on May 20 aiming to secure the road network for Port Hudson operations.
- Colonel William P. Powers defended the crossroads with about 600 men and Abbay’s Mississippi Battery until his ammunition ran out.
- Miles slipped four hundred infantry and an artillery battery through the tree line unnoticed and approached the junction from a parallel track.
- The Forty-eighth Massachusetts and some supporting guns advanced past the occupied junction toward Port Hudson, separated from Augur’s main body.
- Many of the Union men at Plains Store were volunteers fighting in combat for the first time in humid Louisiana pine and bayou country.
