The Royal Will: A Scandalous Inheritance, 20 Years Younger
In this episode, we tell the story of Maria Letizia Bonaparte’s life from her conventual childhood to a marriage that promised autonomy, and the will opened in 1926 that upended expectations. What forces shaped her choices, and what did her final bequest mean for a family already twice dispossessed?
Person: Maria Letizia Bonaparte
Date: November 20, 1866 (birth); Autumn 1926 (will opened); September 11, 1888 (wedding)
Location: Palais Royal, Paris; Castello di Moncalieri, Turin; Royal Palace (wedding)
Event: Wedding to Amadeus, Duke of Aosta; will leaving estate to Norberto Fischer
Person: Norberto Fischer
- Born into the Bonaparte-Savoy nexus, Maria Letizia was raised in a sheltered, devout household at Moncalieri under her mother Maria Letizia.
- Negotiated dynastic marriages and failed matches framed her options: rumors with Prince Roland and a near-arrangement with Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy closed by the mid-1880s.
- Her uncle Amadeus, a former king with a substantial inheritance, courted and then married her in 1888 after a papal dispensation overcame canon law obstacles.
- The marriage promised Maria Letizia autonomy, title, and a household separate from her mother’s constrained life of piety and waiting.
- In 1926 a notary in Italy opened her will and recorded that she had left everything to Norberto Fischer, a military officer twenty years younger with no dynastic claim.
