What does it mean to move beyond ego in Alcoholics Anonymous?
In “Breaching the Walls of Ego,” Marty C. of Ontario, Canada, addresses a subject central to the spiritual principles of recovery: recognizing the fears, resentments, pride, and self-centered thinking that can become barriers to personal growth.
Presented at the 2025 Alcoholics Anonymous International Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia, this discussion considers the importance of honesty, humility, willingness, and learning to live differently through the Twelve Steps.
The walls we build around ourselves can sometimes feel like protection. Yet those same walls may prevent us from accepting help, developing meaningful relationships, and experiencing the freedom that recovery can offer.
The Twelve Steps encourage continued self-examination, acceptance, and spiritual growth—not as a single achievement, but as an ongoing way of life.
Held July 3–6, 2025, the convention marked the 90th anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Under the theme “90 Years – Language of the Heart,” more than 33,000 attendees from 89 countries gathered in Vancouver to celebrate the worldwide Fellowship and the shared experience of recovery.
