Not every leader commands the room. Some lead by listening, and for Dan Wrightsman, that instinct started early. Born in South Korea and adopted into an Army family, he grew up on military bases, enlisted as an infantryman at nineteen, and spent thirty years in uniform building a career around the people beside him. From the beaches of Hawaii to the streets of Baghdad, Dan carried the same belief into every assignment: take care of your team, and they will take care of everything else. As he puts it, the one constant across every post was having great teammates. In this episode of the Tango Tango podcast, sponsored by CareSource Military & Veterans, host Lloyd Knight sits down with retired Army Sergeant Major Dan Wrightsman to reflect on his journey from Army brat in Korea to thirty years of service and beyond. Dan shares lessons from his early years as a light fighter in Hawaii, the culture shock of transitioning from military to civilian schools, the personal growth that came with recruiting duty, and the realities of leading troops through deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He also opens up about the challenges of retiring as a sergeant major and finding his footing in the civilian world.Today, Dan serves as Deputy Director of Operations for the South Carolina Department of Veteran’s Affairs, advocating for veterans through workforce development, education, and entrepreneurship. Through his Bush Institute personal leadership project, he championed Veterans Treatment Courts across the state, helping veterans receive treatment and reconnect with their communities. His message is rooted in the same belief that carried him through thirty years of service: take care of your people, lean on your training, and never underestimate the power of a good team.Jump into the conversation:(00:00) Intro(01:58) Growing up as an Army brat in Korea(03:45) Culture shock of military to civilian schools(08:53) Early lessons from leaders in Hawaii(14:17) Volunteering for recruiting duty in Sacramento(17:58) Recruiting through 9/11 and the surge(19:49) Leading troops in combat across Iraq(23:15) The differences between Iraq and Afghanistan(25:45) How Ranger School reinforced combat lessons(28:57) First assignment as a sergeant major(30:52) Retiring after thirty years and transition stress(34:23) Translating infantry skills to the civilian world(36:32) The mission of South Carolina Veterans Affairs(39:14) Championing Veterans Treatment Courts in South CarolinaAdditional Links & Resources:Learn more about CareSource Military & Veterans: https://www.caresource.com/about-us/caresource-military-and-veterans/Learn more about Tango Tango: https://supplychainnow.com/program/tango-tangoConnect with Lloyd Knight: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lloydknightConnect with Dan Wrightsman: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-wrightsman-0ab70ab6/Learn more about South Carolina Department of Veteran’s Affairs: https://scdva.sc.gov/Work with us!
