Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 15 and Proverbs 19:9–16. The reflection follows Saul receiving a clear command from the Lord to destroy the Amalekites, only to spare King Agag and the best of the plunder while insisting he obeyed. When Samuel confronts him, Saul’s excuses reveal a leader driven by fear of the people rather than fear of God, and Samuel announces that God will tear the kingdom from him as a result. The discussion sits with the strange language of God “regretting” making Saul king, showing it describes God’s response to Saul’s sin rather than any change in God’s own unchanging character, then traces the line of Judah forward to the better King who was promised — pointing past Saul’s failure to the hope believers have in Christ.
Proverbs 19:9–16 moves through a string of practical wisdom: slow anger and genuine forgiveness, honoring parents and handling family conflict, peacemaking within marriage, and the contrast between diligence and the hunger that laziness invites. The episode closes, as always, with a call to repent and believe the gospel, and the reminder that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
