A Soviet consul in Mashhad sends one secret dispatch that costs Stalin's trust-what happens when diplomacy collides with covert power?

A single secret dispatch from Mashhad that lost him Stalin's trust

In this episode, we trace the years between a Sochi dacha where Garegin Apresov sat with Stalin and a forest outside Oryol where men were shot. The episode follows Apresov’s rise through diplomacy and intelligence in Persia and Xinjiang, and asks how a man so useful to Moscow fell from favor.

Person: Garegin Abramovich Apresov
Date: 11 September 1941
Location: Oryol (forest outside Oryol)
Event: secret dispatches and intelligence operations from Mashhad and Xinjiang
Period: 1922-1934 (service in Persia and transfer to Xinjiang)

- Born in Baku in 1890, Apresov studied law in Moscow, served on the Caucasian Front, and moved into revolutionary and diplomatic roles without waiting for permission.
- In 1922-1924 he served as consul in Rasht, Mashhad, and Isfahan and acted as Soviet Commissioner in Persia while cultivating language skills and regional networks.
- British dispatches in January 1923 accused him of organizing thefts of consular documents in Mashhad; copies of private correspondence flowed to Moscow via his network.
- Colleagues and defectors described him as fluent in Persian and a Turkic dialect, adept in the psychology of the East, and “created by nature” for OGPU work in the region.
- In 1933-34 he was posted to Xinjiang where he coordinated secret Soviet military support for warlord Sheng Shicai as Red Army units crossed the border without insignia.
